We were now on our way to Venice, Italy. Sitting comfortably on the Private boat, I drank a Shorly Temple, knowing anything stronger than that would only make me incapable of doing much for the mission.
I took a sip, feeling refreshed at the break of not being chased, if only for a moment. I watched as the waves pushed at the boat, relaxation coursing through my body. I felt a weight settle on my shoulder, and opened my eyes to see Lovey sitting there. I smiled. "Care for a drink?" I said, offering her the glass. She cooed, taking a sip. I chuckled.
I looked around the boat, when I noticed Walter watching something. Wait a minute... IS THAT HEART AND SOUL!?!? I made my way over, Lovey still sitting on my shoulder. "Whatcha watching?" I asked. Walter didn't answer. I tapped his shoulder, causing him to jump. He removed the headphones from his ears, pausing the video. "Hey, what's up?" He leaned against the desk, trying to look cool. I giggled.
"So, I couldn't help but notice you-"
"Walter! You're still working on that antidote, right?" Lance interrupted. "Michelle, do you mind not distracting the genius?" I rolled my eyes, thinking of all the times that Lance would be distracted by pretty women on our missions.
"Working on it? In a couple minutes it's done!" Walter exclaimed. Lance sighed in relief. "But you know what else is working?"
"If you say being a pigeo-"
"Being a Pigeon!"
Lance scoffed, looking at me. "I'm really gonna throw this boy in the ocean." He threatened, going to take a sip of his Martini. Suddenly, Crazy Eyes zoomed past, and Jeff hopped over, trying to drink the Martini. "Woah, hey! How did y'all get here?!" Lance asked, trying to keep the Martini away from the other birds.
"Those birds aren't gonna abandon you if they think you're a part of their flock." I pointed out, giving Lovey another sip of my drink. She drank, then flew over to Lance as well. After a few seconds of being bothered by the other pigeons, Walter came to his rescue, offering the birds Breadcrumbs. "They're gluten free." He said happily. I tilted my head, sitting by his side. "Why gluten free?" I asked.
"Well, Gluten can cause obesity and diabetes in birds. And I wouldn't want to harm them when they just want food." He slightly pouted, which got me to giggle. "What?" He asked.
"Nothing. It's just... you are too cute Walter Beckett." I said, not really caring about the fact that Lance was giving me a weird look. Walter blushed, and before he could say anything, a beeping noise came from his equipment. "Its ready." He said, walking over to the equipment.
"Finally." I watched from the side as Walter inserted one of Lance's feathers into a beaker, then two drops of the antidote. It glowed green, swirling around. We watched in anticipation.
Suddenly, a black gloop erupted from the beaker. "Well that's not good."
"Not good as in, it will taste bad but still turn me back into a human?" I scoffed.
"Not good as in it won't turn you into a human, and if you drink it all your cells will catch on fire."
"Come on man!" Lance complained.
"I'm sorry! I'll figure it out! Science is all trial and error." Walter defended.
"This isn't a science lab! If I don't stop this guy, PEOPLE will DIE!"
By this point, I was getting really fed up over the arguements. I really wanted to shout at the both of them, but Walter beat me to it.
"You don't think I wanna stop him too!? Why do you think I'm on this boat!? Do you have any idea how much motion sickness medication I'm on?! I CAN HARDLY FEEL MY LEGS!!"
It surprised me that the normally shy and quiet Walter Beckett was shouting at Lance like this, but I was honestly proud that he was standing up for himself.
"But I am here, because I believe that together, the three of us can find a good way to stop the bad."
Lance sighed. "I know you do, man. But it's a fantasy. When the bad guys hit you, you hit them back. You hit them so hard, that they don't get back up. You've got to fight fire, with fire."
Walter looked angry at this. "When we fight fire with fire, we all get burned." He looked sad now. "Theres no good guys and bad guys. Just people. And people are worth saving. Isn't that our job?"
I wanted so badly to answer his question with a yes. But I knew that wasn't it. We don't save people. We protect our people. The innocent ones that have done no wrong. But the moment you mess up, you become the enemy. The ones that try to attack us are the ones we fight. That's our job.
"Evil doesn't care that you're nice." Lance stated. He looked saddened at a sudden thought. "We've watched good people get taken, every day." He paused, then turned. "But you wouldn't know nothing about that."
He walked off, leaving Walter and I to stare after him. Walter looked down sadly. "You'd be surprised."
I was startled by his sudden statement. Walter had lost someone too? I already knew about Lance's story, and I had my own demons, but who exactly had Walter lost that caused him so much grief?
I watched as he walked away, to a different part of the ship. I glanced at Lovey, who looked back and forth between Lance and Walter. I sighed, knowing she too was confused on what to do to help the two men.
"I know Lovey. What are we suppose to do?"
