"James, can you please go see whose child is wailing so loudly right outside our house at 5 in the morning?"

"Ok Mom" said James, reaching for the door knob. The moment he opened the door, his eyes landed on the little bundle of blankets on the doorstep. "Mom!" he yelled, making the baby screech more.

_

James giggled as he saw how the baby, now lying in his mothers lap, laughed when he played with the rattle toy as his parents sat on the couch, trying to decide what to do. Finally Mrs. Matthews let out an exasperated sigh, and said "It would be a blessing if someone could enlighten me about what is going on here. First we hear some poor woman screaming her lungs out into the death of the night, probably about three streets away, and then we hear weird gunshot like sounds, also sounding distant, and now this baby?!?!"

Suddenly, a thought popped into little James' mind, and he asked "Mom, Dad, we're keeping this small baby with us, right? She's so cute, and I want a little sister. Please?". After a little more discussing on the parent's side, Mr. Matthews told James "Okay, I think we'll be adopting her after all. That's what this note we found in her blankets says too. It would be inhuman to leave such an innocent creature out in this cruel world all alone. We'll be going out to finish up the legal work, and then we'll have complete custody of her. So what do you want to call your younger sister?". "How does Sherin sound?" Mrs. Matthews wondered aloud. "Sounds great to me, as long as I get to have a little sister." Said James, not even having paid attention to what they said because he was so engrossed in playing with the cute baby.

"James, being a big brother comes with responsibilities. Do you promise to be a good boy and help us take care of her?" asked Mrs. Matthews.

"Of course, Mom, I'm always a good boy!"

Mrs. Matthews tried to hold back her laughter, but failed miserably and ended up bursting into fits of laughter looking at the cute 9 year old in front of her, standing proudly with his hands on his hip.

_

Over the next few months, James grew very fond and rather protective of Sherin, who loved her brother just as much. The Matthews were getting accustomed to a pretty noisy household. Over the years, the family's bonds with each other grew unbreakably strong.
