"What about the kit? We never killed it!" "She'll come out eventually. Just wait it out."

Autumn awoke to the sound of an argument. Wolves! she thought. She looked around the den. She saw movement outside in the woods. "They're waiting for me to come out," she whispered to herself.

Coldness gripped her heart. She would die here in this very den, beside her parents. Should I take a chance and run? she thought hopefully. "I must! I'll run! I'll live another day!" she said triumphantly.

Autumn crept towards the entrance of the den, careful not to make a sound that would draw the wolves' attention. Autumn could see four wolves, three males and one female. Scarlet wasn't there. They argued, not noticing Autumn sneaking out.

"Scarlet wants every last one of them dead," the she-wolf said. "She'll kill us if we don't get this kit! It's probably the last one!"

Last one? What did the wolf mean? Autumn was confused, but didn't stop to listen to their conversation. Not paying attention, Autumn stepped on a twig. She stopped. The wolves turned their heads and looked at Autumn.

"KILL HER!" one of the male wolves shouted. Autumn started running, her wings flailing in the wind. She looked over her shoulder to see the wolves hard on her heels. She ran faster, but she couldn't escape the dreadful snarling sounds of the wolves.

The trees around her started to thin and the grass started to disappear. Autumn was running across a more barren landscape. Rocks scraped the pads of her paws.

"She's getting away!" one wolf screamed. Autumn was getting tired. All the air seemed to leave her lungs and her legs started to get numb. She had never run this much before.

Autumn skidded to a halt at the edge of a cliff. Rocks tumbled below where Autumn had stopped. "That's a long way down," Autumn said to herself. She looked around, there was no where else to go. The wolves were drawing closer.

She had no choice. I've never flown before, she thought desperately. She looked at her wings. Here I go.

Her beautiful, white wings opened up. She held her breath, then she jumped.
