The pain that my mother's swing caused, blinded me for a few seconds before I could recognize my surroundings again.

I was rushing to make her dinner when she woke up from her five hour long nap when she found out that her meal wasn't ready. She immediately grabbed her phone and chucked it across the room to not only hit me in the head, but cause me to lose my footing and slip to slam my hand onto the cupboard and twist my knee to the point of snapping.

She screamed with complete disregard for my well being, " why is dinner not made! I expect one thing out of you! To make me, my damn dinner every night! Is that too much to ask! Damn it! Get back to work!"

I slowly glanced back as I heard her footsteps fading away. I reached slowly for my phone that was in my pocket. I couldn't feel anything from my waist down so, trying to grab my phone was especially hard because I couldn't move my lower body to get a better angle.

"Alexa?" My voice was hoarse and excruciating pain flooded the back of my eyes.

"No, this is Cole. I found this phone out in the parking lot. Who is this?" Shit. How the hell did Alexa lose her phone?

"Oh, sorry. Its Madelyne. I was just wondering if you could maybe come to my house and help me? I cant reach Alexa, obviously, but I really need help. Please?" I croaked into the speaker. I heard him sigh on the other end of the line.

"Sure. Where do you live?" He forced out.

I gave him address and then, "but wait. When you get here. You have to be really quiet, please. And just walk right in the front door and walk in the first doorway on your left. I will be in the kitchen. Please hurry."

Cole answered, his voice sounding a bit more skeptical, almost worried, "ok... I guess, I will see you in like five minutes then." He quickly hung up the phone and I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding.

It took him about as long as he said it would and I heard him open up the front door.

"Madelyne?" Came a loud whisper. I heard him enter through the kitchen doorway.

"I'm down here. Please. Help." I groaned and suddenly his feet were rushing over to me.

He fell down at my side, no hoodie covering his eyes, which were widened in alarm. "Oh my God. Are you ok? What happened?"

"I'm fine. I just can't feel my legs. Please help me up." I reached for his shoulder and he quickly grabbed my arm, trying to slide me into a sitting position.

"Made! Jeez! Why didn't you call 9-1-1 instead? Did you get hurt anywhere else?" He asked me, genuine concern laced his voice as he held me in a sitting position with him. His back was pressed up against our counter and he had me positioned in between his legs with his arms wrapped around my midsection. Any other girl would be dying from contact from Cole like this, but all I could think about was the mind-numbing pain coming from my hand and my knee.

Silent tears rolled down my cheeks as I gripped his thigh to stop from screaming out in pain. "Made, we have to call an ambulance right now. You can't frickin walk! I am calling one right now!"

He started to reach for his phone, but I grabbed his hand, "please, just take me to your house. Anywhere but here." He looked at me like I had two heads.

"Why? Why don't you want to go to a hospital? Come on Made, they will help you! You are clearly suffering from at least a few broken bones!" He whispered to me, while gripping my hand.

"I can't. I just can't. Please, I'm begging you Cole. Please." I whimpered, desperately trying to sway him to just bring me anywhere else.

He sighed, reluctantly helping me get up. Cole grabbed my legs and, gently, swung me up into his arms and carried me out to his car. I buried my face in his shirt and sobbed, without making a sound.

He lightly set me down in the passenger seat of his car, reluctantly letting go of my hand. Cole ran over to the driver's side and quickly got the car going.

"Thank you." I whispered as I closed my eyes, sleep was tugging at my eyes.

"Madelyne, did you hit your head?" He asked me, warily glancing over at my sleepy figure.

I yawned, weak from my crying and pain, " yeah, really hard. It hurts. Why?"

"Shit. Don't fall asleep. Please stay with me!" He reached for my good hand and squeezed it, hard. Startling me and causing me to open my eyes wide at his gesture. I glanced over at him and smiled.

"I won't. Just please keep holding my hand. I like the way your hand fits in mine." I must have been really out of it to say something like that because Cole laughed, a forced laugh, and squeezed my hand again.

"Don't worry. I won't let go. Not this time." I smiled, and turned my head to rest on his shoulder as we drove out of my neighborhood and to the other part of town. The rich part of town.
