As it turns out, Cole's mother is a nurse and his father is a doctor. Which is pretty coincidental if you ask me.
The entire ten minute car ride to his house was silent except for his occasional calling out of my name and squeezing of my hand to see if I was still awake. Luckily, he caught me before I would fall asleep everytime and I would squeeze back, causing a faint smile to grace his lips.
He had pulled into his driveway and gently lifted me out of his car and to the front door when I heard his mother call out his name. She came walking through a doorway that must've led to the kitchen and took one look at me in Cole's arms and rushed us to their guest room.
"Hi honey. Can you tell me what happened?" His mother opened my eyes wide and shone a light into them for my eyes to follow. Her eyes shone with worry and I glanced at Cole who was sitting on the other side of the bed with the same look in his eyes.
I swallowed, "um, I was making dinner and the last thing I remember is slipping and falling before I hit my head on the counter and floor." I stole another quick glance at Cole and watched him reach for my hand, I met him halfway. " Then I tried calling my friend, but she must've dropped her phone and Cole was the one who answered so he came to get me."
His mother looked at him, as if to verify that this was the truth and I felt him nod with his whole body. She looked back at me.
"Well, you for sure have a concussion dearie. It looks like you also might have broken your hand and possibly torn a ligament in your knee. Now, to get proper care you are going to have to go to the hospital. But, Cole tells me that you insisted on not going? Why is that?" She relayed what I had already figured about my injuries and I started to think of how I could get out of telling her the real reason I couldn't go to the hospital.
"Well, my family just can't afford it. Ya know? All of those bills would drag us under and we would probably lose the house." I answered her, hopefully skunding convincing. After all, it wasn't a complete lie.
She looked a bit skeptical, but sighed, "all right honey. Well, I'm really sorry about your injuries. I can get my husband to bring some stuff home so we can get you all situated. I will go grab our x-ray machine." His mother gave a gentle tap on my leg and left the room in search of the machine.
I felt a tug on my good hand and looked over at Cole. His grip was tight and his eyes still held a immense amount of concern, especially for someone he had just met.
"You know, you can stay here while you get all healed up." He told me, his dark green eyes were locked and concentrated on mine as he spoke, "I wouldn't mind having someone to take care of." His small smile reverted back into a smirk and I resisted the urge to smack him. I weakly lifted my hand out of his grasp and brought it back down on his, it only resulted in him letting out his deep laugh and I smiled at this. Glad to see him genuinely happy.
His laugh calmed down and his fingers reached out for mine again, intertwining them. I sighed, comforted by the small gesture. My eyes blinked slowly and I started to drift off. "Oh no you don't," his deep voice brought me out of my sleepy trance and I lifted my eyes open. His other hand was now patting my cheek, turning my head so I could face towards him.
"Cole, I'm f-fine," I said while yawning and accidentally tried to reach up and pry his hand away with my broken one. That was definitely a mistake. I cried out in pain and another tear rolled down my cheek. His eyes flashed and he quickly hopped onto the bed with me, taking my head and pressing it against his chest gently. He turned my body and I wrapped my good arm around him and he pulled me in, careful of my injuries.
"It's ok. Shush, its ok." He whispered into my hair, gently running his hand up and down my back to calm me down and get my mind off the pain.
His mom decided to walk in at that moment and I felt him tense. "Cole! You are hurting the poor girl!" I heard him swat at his arm and he started to untangle himself from me.
