In a pitch-black room, one window let the moonlight shine upon one singular bed. A nightstand had a lamp, a single old photograph and a random book next to it...
"I can't sleep..." grumbled the man, who rose from the dirty sheets.
It was Charlie Hewitt, the oldest son of Luda Mae Hewitt.
"I will take a stroll, outside..." Charlie thought his insomnia wasn't getting any better as the years passed.
"Perhaps, some fresh air will help..." The dark circles under his brown eyes made him look older.
Sceptical, yet with no other options to help him in this particular case.
"...Creak..."
"..."
"...Thud...!"
"Damn, those creaky sounds!" Charlie cursed under his breath as he stepped out on the porch after closing the door.
He hoped that he didn't wake up his mother. Taking a box of matches from one of his pockets to light up a cigarette, inhaled deeply and exhaled the vile smoke from his lungs.
"Old habits, die hard!" a low chuckle escapes his lips.
He continues to smoke his cigarette, his eyes lost on the horizon.
Until his gaze shifted to the other side of the road. His eyes stuck on the new neighbour's house. Her outside lights were off. It was odd...
"It's none of my business!" thought Charlie, putting out his cigarette by stomping on it! Yet, a nagging feeling remained in the back of his mind...
On the other of the road, a person emerges from the shadows.
"Something is wrong..." Charlie blinked twice before getting off of the porch. Approaching the road, Malika walked towards her house weirdly.
It looked like she was walking on auto-pilot.
"Good morning, miss!" Charlie called out to his new neighbour, titled his sheriff hat, "Why are you up, so early?" asked Charlie, six feet from the beautiful plump woman. His curiosity is not going to be the death of him!
"Good morning, Sheriff!" Malika responded in a polite yet monotone voice. It made Charlie's hair stand on end! And he didn't like it!
"Insomnia", Malika tiredly replied with a sigh, which caused Charlie to sigh in return, understanding the problem. Two insomniacs, standing outside to get some fresh air in three of the morning...
"Any medication?" asked Charlie to which Malika shook her head, "I tried, but it didn't work" She shook her head again in disappointment.
Before Charlie can ask anything else, Malika raises her hand causing Charlie to stop. It took him by surprise!
"I'm sorry, sheriff" Malika apologised, lowering her hand, "I'm going back to bed if you don't mind..." offering a soft smile to which Charlie, nodded.
"...Crunch, crunch, crunch..."
"She is gone..." Charlie released a sigh of relief, unconsciously from the moment that Malika left his line of sight. Her voice gave him the chills.
