Next morning at Hewitt's house!
Hoyt embarked on his shift, his old yet vigilant eyes scanning the streets as he made his customary rounds around town. Earlier, he had dropped off Luda May at the gas station, where she had already begun serving a few early clients. However, a sense of unease settled over her as she observed three mysterious figures enter her shop. Clad in black suits, their emotionless faces betrayed no hint of their intentions as they meticulously searched the premises. Luda May's discomfort heightened as one of them approached the counter to greet her, sending an inexplicable shiver down her spine.
"We apologize for the inconvenience, madam. Have you seen this person?" asked one of the three men, revealing an old picture.
The photograph depicted a young Malika with a messy haircut, her eyes covered, and bandages wrapped around her neck, torso, and arms, suggesting she was in a hospital gown. Her dry lips, sickly skin, and multiple scars, bruises, and traces of blood made her appear lifeless, a stark contrast to the vibrant and wise girl Luda May knew!
Overwhelmed by the sight, Luda May's maternal instincts prompted her to shake her head in disbelief.
After observing her momentarily, the man bid Luda May goodbye and signalled the others to follow him.
As they left, she breathed a sigh of relief and hurried to call Charlie, warning him about the ominous men.
Hoyt received a call from his mother and immediately sprang into action. As he observed a group of men in the distance, he witnessed them stopping near his house and venturing into the nearby woods. Concerned about attracting unwanted attention, he readied his gun and shotgun before trailing the men from a safe distance. Hoyt knew that the mysterious group had not yet detected his presence. As he approached, he witnessed one of the men searching the body of a deceased individual while the others stood guard. The man annoyed by the situation, brushed off his clothes and stood up, determined to figure out what was happening.
"...We have an issue..." spoke the first man, calmly "...The documents vanished..." he lights up, a cigarette.
"So, someone must be aware of the reward." the second man looked even more annoyed "Great, we don't need any more competition!" he groaned. After all, cleaning up a crime scene wasn't an easy task!
"It's our target!" exclaimed the third bounty hunter, smirking evilly, "It's unlikely that a random person could have bested a seasoned hunter!" he explained, carefully, his theory on the matter.
"...If that's true..." spoke the second man, "Then, our target can't be far away." trailed off, humming in deep thought.
"...Since this is a small town..." declared the first bounty hunter, "It's unlikely that an outsider would pass through without drawing attention!" he prepared his gun in his holster.
"The elderly lady's behaviour at the station seemed highly suspicious to me!" the third man, narrowed his eyes, remembering Luda Mae's behaviour.
"We'll find out the truth from her tonight." spoke the second hunter, nonchalantly. Just a normal routine in their lives...
"Keep it up and I'll cancel your birth certificate!" Hoyt/Charlie shouted, his voice filled with anger! As the first shot hit the first bounty hunter on his left arm!
The group disbanded to try to capture or kill Hoyt/Charlie!
The second bounty hunter pulls out his gun from his holster and takes aim at Hoyt/Charlie, who barely evaded by hiding behind a large tree.
The third bounty hunter charged at Hoyt/Charlie with his hunter knife yet Hoyt/Charlie counterattacked with his new blade, offered by Malika.
"This old sheriff may know about it!" commented the third bounty hunter, smirking evilly as he intercepted Hoyt/Charlie from fleeing!
The second bounty hunter appeared, out of nowhere and punched Hoyt/Charlie on the back of the head, throwing him off guard into the cold dirty ground!
"...Thud...!"
Hoyt/Charlie felt his vision go blurry and his ears rang loudly!
"Keep him down, I will get the rope from the car!" the first bounty hunter said to the second bounty hunter, who nodded back before disappearing from sight!
"...So, Sheriff, care to help out a person in need..." the third bounty hunter said, chuckling evilly as the second bounty hunter sat on Hoyt/Charlie to prevent him from escaping!
The third bounty hunter showed the photograph depicted a young Malika with a messy haircut, her eyes covered, and bandages wrapped around her neck, torso, and arms, suggesting she was in a hospital gown. Her dry lips, sickly skin, and multiple scars, bruises, and traces of blood made her appear lifeless.
Hoyt's old eyes widen in shock after his vision clears up!
"Why is our comrade taking so long to get the rope?" the second bounty hunter asked the third, feeling uneasy.
"Who licked the red off your candy?" Hoyt huffed, feeling crushed by the second bounty hunter's weight on his old back!
"...Thud...!"
"..."
"...The third bounty hunter falls to the ground with an arrow pierced through the man's skull..."
By the time the second bounty hunter comprehended the situation, another arrow had pierced him, and he fell to the dirty ground, dead...
Malika appeared amist the dense forest with a fully-automatic crossbow, looking stoic as she offered her hand to help Hoyt up!
Hoyt thanked her with a simple nod of the head. He wasn't the type to express his gratitude, often, after all...
"...Heading back to Hewitt's residence..."
The atmosphere crackled with hostility as Hoyt stumbled upon a major secret about Malika. He halted, weighing his options with a stern gaze, his mind racing. Despite the tension, he knew he couldn't act impulsively. Malika was a skilled assassin, and any misstep could have dire consequences for Hewitt's family.
Malika halted him from entering his residence by clutching his shirt and pulling him in, their faces inches apart from each other.
"This never happened, understood?" was the only sentence that left Malika's mouth, "Charlie Hewitt?" It was a statement, not a question!
Hoyt/Charlie could feel his rapid heartbeat in his ears as Malika called him by his real name.
...As Malika left him on his porch before vanishing into the dark, starry night, a silent threat lingered in the air, haunting Charlie Hewitt's nights...
