• Chapter 1 •

Ever since the coronavirus pandemic broke out in 2019 people had been desperately searching for a cure. The world went crazy, grown adults fighting for toilet paper and hand sanitizers in stores with limited supplies. Many died, but even more decided to stay in their houses and never go out again. People were scared and governments could not keep them calm up until 2023, when professor Kim Taehyun finally found a working cure. Although vaccination was expensive, everyone saved enough money to get it and thus keep their families safe.

Everything was finally peaceful and the virus was forgotten for a while. But of course, peace could not last forever.

A few years later, more specifically in 2030, the real effects of the life saving vaccine came to the surface.

First, it was the high temperatures and the strong headaches. Many believed it was just a common flu, gulped down some multivitamins and went on with their day.

Then it was the appetite changes. Some started eating way less and others a lot more. Vegans suddenly felt the dire need to consume meat and meat lovers turned to vegetables and fresh fruit. But this wasn't enough to make people worry. Not yet.

What finally drew the line were the visible body changes. Some became slightly taller and some a bit shorter. Many suddenly noticed a disturbing increase in body hair.

After a few more months, people woke up with ears on their heads or whiskers near their mouth. Some even had barely noticeable fins on the sides of their neck and tails on their backs.

The world turned upside down once again as more and more humans began sporting strange animal attributes, physically and mentally.

Married people became increasingly possessive of their spouses and fights between different groups were much more frequent as one tried to assert dominance over the other.

Everyone started asking "What the hell is going on?" But since doctors could not find a reasonable explanation, the press, and the whole world really, turned to Kim Taehyun, who was tugging on his hair like a mad man in his private laboratory in the basement of his extravagant mansion while trying to figure out the answer to everyone's questions.

Some more months passed and on the first day of 2032, Kim Taehyun finally made a public announcement after having gone through a heavily extended research on the cause of all this trouble.

"Hello, everyone. My name is Kim Taehyun and I am the creator of the coronavirus vaccine. When I discovered the vaccine I had only a few months before providing it to the public. As you all know, the situation was extremely difficult back then and many were dying."

The man took a second to anxiously gulp down some water and then, after a big breath, continued:

"I'm going to keep things short since all of you know why I am here today. I am here to tell you that, yes, the vaccine ended up being problematic."

A faint "no shit" was heard from the audience but the scientist continued:

"The vaccine causes abnormal physical and mental changes in the human system, with most of them resembling attributes of specific animals. While making the vaccine I had to use millions of animal samples, even going as far to combine some of them. I have to admit that I didn't fully know the effects this would have back then, but since the vaccine was successful in destroying the virus I just went with it. After researching for the last couple of years for a solution, I realised that there isn't one. All of you will have to accept that you are now... hybrids. A part of you will always be human, but another part will belong to a specific animal. The animal traits you have depend solely on the parts of the vaccine your DNA chain reacted to positively. So some of you may be a cat hybrid while others a dog hybrid. I understand that some new types of unusual hybrids also exist.. Please make sure to search more about the type of animal or creature you think you are now. Me and my colleagues will set up camps worldwide where people with questions about their hybrid breed can visit and get informed. I'm extremely sorry for this and I'm ready to be punished accordingly. Keep in mind, however, that this condition is not deadly. Normal humans will not cease to exist, as some didn't even need to get the vaccination back then. That's all for now. Thank you."
