"Geez, kid, you look like hell."

I didn't bother to glare at Zander as he picked me up for school the following morning. I silently took my seat in the FJ Cruiser and glowered out the window, hoping that the heat of my stare would turn the world to ash and dust.

"Alright, touchy this morning I see," Zander scratched his beard awkwardly before reversing out of the driveway and peeling off down the road. "Did you get your daily dose of caffeine?"

"I'd like to not talk this morning thanks," I spoke quietly, my voice harsh as I pulled my phone out and began scrolling through the apps I had downloaded last night.

Last night...

I gritted my teeth.

"Alright, well, I hope your mood significantly improves before practice," Zander flatly retorted, shooting me a warning look. "I'd hate to pull you into the ring to test your combinations today."

I internally groaned. I hated hopping in the ring with Zander. He was always such an ass about combat and always made sure I left the ring with at least one pretty blue bruise. I hardly ever scored a hit on him. When the other students would watch us, though, they'd always claim Zander hit me harder because I was his favorite.

I focused on the book reading app that I'd abandoned last night as Zander drove in silence.

I'd decided to take Denali's advice and do my research on werewolf culture but the closest I could come was the fantasy section of online book websites. I had to admit though, there wasn't much originality left in this category, and Christ, were these things cringy!

"Zander is there such thing as a moon goddess?" I decided to ask and heard a snort.

"Ah-, kid what teen novel are you reading?" He managed out through a coy grin and I burned a bright red.

"Silence resumed."

Mates were decidedly, common. And the Heat, as Denali called it, was also, a common trend. She-wolves experience increased sexual arousal and obliterating pain between their cycles, but monthly. Like a period. As if periods and childbirth weren't enough. The heat was to encourage mates to seal the mating process for those who were slow to initiate their relationship. But there were clearly negative effects, such as the scent of arousal also draws in other males to the unmated female.

But, the Heat would stop once the mates had been marked.

Which required biting...?
