"Ok! Everyone gather around!"
Isabelle laid a protective hand on her belly as a huge group of people crowded at the table, with excitement on all their faces. A gender-reveal was always interesting. Even to strangers, Isabelle thought as she eyed Ragnor Fell, Tessa, and Jem. And though Isabelle adored Mina and Kit, and they were always welcome, she and Simon had made the mistake of telling people when the special cake had arrived. They were going to have to fumigate after to get the human smell out.
A hand jolted Isabelle from her thoughts, and she smiled as her husband took her hand in his. They were at the end of a long table in the institute, and a scene such as this brought Isabelle back to war.
But there was no war. Some days she had to be reminded.
"Are we gonna do this or what?" Jace asked, practically bouncing on his toes. His wife shared equal delight. Isabelle gave him a look, and reached for the knife, making sure to take a while just to make a few people squirm. Right before cutting the cake, she paused. Her hand hovered over the white frosting.
"First," she said, and everyone groaned, "I want to thank everyone for coming, and especially my best friends for making this possible. You guys mean the world to me."
"Uh, babe?" Simon interrupted, looking at the faces surrounding them, "something tells me that by the time you're done, you won't have friends anymore."
Isabelle slammed the knife into the cake, sharp end first, making everyone jump.
"Fine," she snarled, "I tried to be sentimental." Isabelle brought the knife down, and cut a slice. Without looking at it, she put it on a plate.
"Drumroll please!" Simon banged the forks on the table, and Isabelle kissed him in the cheek.
"The biological gender of the baby is!" Isabelle held the plate up, and stared, "purple?"
She turned to Simon, "it's purple. The cake is purple."
"That would be a good song name," he mused. Isabelle smacked him lightly.
Shouts started to rise from the guests. The mob was angry.
"See if you can get them on the phone," Isabelle whispered to Simon. He nodded and left. No one noticed. They were too busy yelling at her, each other, and the cake.
"Why are you people like this!?", she stated incredulously. Magnus laughed beside her, and said something about children and desserts. The noise was making it hard to hear. Isabelle had enough. She whistled. The voices stopped and everyone stared at her.
"Simon has Catarina on the phone now," she said, "everyone be quiet so we can hear the actual results!" An awkward silence fell as the group waited. Finally, Simon came into the room. Everybody held their breath. Isabelle found herself not caring what gender the baby was, as long as it arrived safely.
Simon walked up to Isabelle and wrapped an arm around her waist. She leaned into him. He turned to the crowd and grinned.
"It's a girl."
Everyone started cheering and Isabelle kissed her husband, her love, her livelihood. She couldn't wait to start her family.
