Chapter 9: Surprise!

I've been waiting for Axel for a solid 3 weeks while he said he would be out of town for only a week. I'm thankful that I've been busy with my work and at the same time at my studies to keep my mind preoccupied. I also saw Yuhan at the restaurant when I came to eat with Lisa.

"So that is your latest?" Lisa asked when he saw Yuhan.

"Yeah, why?" I answered as I finished writing my notes.

"He's quite good looking." She said and wiggled her eyebrows at me.

I only laughed at her and started to dig on my pasta. The same pasta Yuhan had always cooked for me everytime I visit his house. When we finished we asked for the bill and went out after saying goodbye to the owner.

"Girl, the food there is so delicious we should go back when we have a chance." She said while getting inside my car.

"You just want to see the waiter again Lisa." I said while I rolled my eyes. Here she comes when it comes to boys. It's not that she is a play girl but she easily fall for someone that's why she always ends up with a broken heart.

"No silly, it's just that, their food is so good that I want to come back there again." She defends.

"Enough with the cute guys Lisa." I sighed.

"Sure, as long as you stop holding on to Axel." She answered back. Ouch, can I get some cold water? I've been burned. I mentally told myself.

"Haha. Very funny Lisa." I replied sarcastically. She laughed and I dropped her off to her house. When I came home, I received a text from Axel.

Sorry I just got home. Meet me tomorrow at our usual spot. I have a surprise for you.

Wow sounds fun. I have something to say to you also. Btw, what time? I replied.

3 pm. See you there.

I suddenly got excited, he has a surprise for me! How thoughtful. But then I got nervous, the emotions that I have been suppressing is now coming out. Just tell him that you love him. Simple as that. I wish it would be simple but what if he freaked out again like the last time I told him about commitment? I sighed and went to my room and try to watch the live streaming of my favorite volleyball team, and not for long my mind forgot about tomorrow.

Next day

I came to our usual spot feeling excited and at the same time nervous. Our spot is at a beachfront restaurant that serves fresh seafoods. The food tastes good and you have the beach and sunset to complete the experience. We always go there when we want to eat outside and we both agreed not to eat with someone else when we go there. It is strictly for us to enjoy.

George, our usual waiter saw me and waved. He handed me the menu and asked for my order.

"Hannah! Good to see you again. You came here alone? Where's Axel?" He asked.

"Good to see you again too George. I am waiting for him actually. You know him, he always comes late." I explained and smiled at him.

I ordered our usual and two iced tea. I look at the beach and watch the waves kiss the sand. I remembered our moments together with Axel at the beach. He would always lock me in place with his legs causing me to drown and I would always pinch his friend down there to let me go. I laughed at our childishness, good times. The food and drinks arrived and still no Axel. I am growing impatiently and decided to scroll on facebook when a voice surprised me.

"Hannah." It was Axel. I immediately looked up and smiled at him.

"Hey. You're late, as usual."

"I know I'm sorry." He said and laughed.

"Where's my surprise?" I asked expectantly, excitement is evident on my face.

"Oh right. Hannah, I want you to meet Maica, my girlfriend." He said as a girl from his back that I didn't noticed appeared beside him. And that previous excitement deflates from my expression.

"Maica, this is Hannah my bestfriend." He said while looking at me expectantly. He also added "surprise!" In the end. A surprise that is not what I expected

I swallowed the lump in my throat and forced a confused smile.

"Hello Hannah, I've heard a lot about you." She said while kissing my cheek and smiling.

"Hello, I didn't heard about you." I said jokingly while forcing a laugh and turning to Axel waiting for explanation.

"I know, I didn't told you about her because I thought it would be great if I introduce her to you in person. Were you surprised? Can you imagine I am dating again after how many years." He said gleefully and there is something in his eyes, an emotion that I never saw when he looks at me. It was love. Axel is in love. That is why he freaked out when I told him about my feelings the first time. He could have just tell me that he was already with someone. I am so angry right now but I hid it with a smile. He made me look like a fool.

"Wow. That is great news Axel." Was all I can manage to say.

"Let's sit ladies." He said as he put the table napkin on her legs. Jealousy came over me he used to do that to me. I said to myself.

"Sorry I only ordered for two persons. Axel didn't inform me that he will come with someone." I said and shot an apologetic look at her.

"It's okay sis. Oh, is it okay if I call you sis? 'Cause you know, you and Axel were like brothers and sisters. You know, as your future sister." She said innocently and smiling sweetly at me. I choked on my drink.

Sis my ass. Brothers and sisters? We've been hooking up for a long time for fuck's sake! I shouted back mentally. Meanwhile Axel showed discomfort from her statement. Good for you asshole.

"Sure you can." I replied while looking at Axel dead in the eyes to mock him.

"By the way, you said you wanted to say something to me, what is it?" He asked.

"Oh that, I broke up with Yuhan." I answered.

"Why? I thought you are going strong?" He asked sounding surprised.

"Well, shit happens." I replied back and call for George.

"Hi George can I order some beer?" I asked and everyone on the table looked at me like I have grown another limb.

Okay, this did not go according to plan. I sighed as I watch the two in front of me help each other with the shells as I help myself not to cry.
