JAY WAS MAKING ME walk at least two miles and he wouldn’t tell me where we were going. I was not opposed to surprises but I would hate to be disappointed if we walked so much. I needed to be assured that doing so much hard work would be worth it and my labor would bear fruits.
“Jay,” I whined as I tugged on his arm but he didn’t even look at me. “Just tell me where we are going or what we are going to do.”
“Ali,” he chastised as he continued to trudge forward. He was basically dragging half my body weight by now and I frowned at him.
“Jay,” I cooed. “Just tell me, please. I’ll treat you with two chocolate cake slices,” I said.
He shot me a flat look. “I do not accept bribes, West,” he said, making me roll my eyes.
“Shut up, I know you do. Remember that time when you did all my English homework for two slurpees?” I badgered, not ready to let go of the topic yet.
“Add those two slurpees and I’ll tell you what we are doing,” he brokered a deal finally and I smacked his arm but agreed to the deal all the same. I did not want to be disappointed and if two slurpees were all it took, I would gladly pay for them.
Someday, I would be broke of how much bribe I had to feed to Jay.
“You got it,” I grinned.
“We are going to meet my recent crush,” he said and I halted in my walking. And I yanked on his shirt so hard, he nearly fell. He put up his hands in defense, glaring at me for making him fall but I just stared at him.
“You fucking moron,” I cursed, looking him in the eye and his jaw fell open. He began to protest and rebuke but I just held up a finger and jabbed it in his chest, making sure it hurt. “You asshole, you didn’t tell me that you had a new crush. You betrayed my trust. How could you do this to me?”
I was not being dramatic. He had sat listening, watching me talk about Noah and asking all about my love life (or lack there-of) yesterday and he hadn’t said a word.
He laughed, throwing an arm around my shoulder as we moved forward. I pulled a face but let him drag me along. Jay ruffled my hair as he laughed some more. “It’s a recent development. I saw him a few days ago at a florist shop and I was ready to drop my pants when I saw him--”
While the story must have been interesting, I had stopped listening after he said a few days. “Few days?” I screeched and Jay pushed me away.
“Ram! Your voice is so fucking pitchy, Ali,” he frowned as he made a show of how much I had hurt him. It only made me want to smack him harder. Jay was starting to keep secrets, and I did not like that.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked and since my hormones were all over the place lately, a little hurt seeped into my voice. His face immediately softened and he reached out to take my hand in his.
