When she crashes into the lanky stranger Taylor almost has a heart attack. She falls to the leaf covered ground and stays there as she looks up at the person to find it's a girl her age.
'Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry! I wasn't looking where I was going, honestly! Forgive me?' She rambles before quickly helping Taylor up.
'It's okay, don't worry.' Taylor chuckles. 'I didn't die.'
The girl sighs in relief. 'I'm happy you're not mad.' The two girls smile at each other.
'I got your dress all dirty though.' Stranger girl notes worriedly. She then gasps. 'And there's blood on your elbow!' Taylor observes her indeed bloody elbow, forgetting about her new dress as she notices blood dripping down her lower arm. Pain sets in and she bites her lip. 'Ouch.' She murmurs, still gazing at it. 'Come with me. My house is right there. We have band aids.' The girl suggests, pointing at a light in the distance.
'I don't even know your name.' Taylor responds a little bewildered. 'It's Karlie.' Stranger girl, now named Karlie sticks out a muddy hand. 'I'm Taylor.' And then the girls shake hands because that's what grown ups do.
'Alright Karlie.' Taylor says when they're done laughing about their grown up handshake. 'I trust you to not kill me.' 'So that means you'll let me bandage your wounds?' Karlie asks in reply causing Taylor to giggle. 'Yes, you have permission.' 'Good that's more than wonderful. Wouldn't want you to bleed to your death out here.' Karlie jokes. And when Taylor laughs she grins, taking the girl's hand and leading the way._______
Once they reach Karlie's house, humming Christmas songs the whole walk there, Karlie knocks on the door as Taylor admires the wooden cabin. 'This is so pretty.'
'Thanks! We moved here 3 weeks ago. My mom, sisters and me I mean.' Why no dad? Taylor wants to ask but before she gets the chance the door's been pulled open by two toddlers.
'KARLIE!' They shout immediately hugging their big sister. 'Krissy's being mean again. 'What do you want me to do Kimby? She's bigger than me.' 'Yeah but you're nicer. Also who's this.'
'Yeah who's this?' Karlie's 13 year old sister asks, joining them in the hallway.
'Oh this is Taylor. A friend I made. She almost died in the woods but she's okay now.' Taylor waves shyly, with her unscathed hand of course.
'God, Karlie you're so ridiculous.' Kristine begins to walk away. 'You and your weird imagination.' She murmurs before Karlie stops her. 'No! Look! She's bleeding.' Karlie raises Taylor's arm. Her elbow stopped bleeding like 2 minutes ago but the dried up blood still looks scary and what's life without a little dramatic flair to it.
'Fine, I'll get your weird friend a bandaid.' 'It's Taylor and she's not weird!' Karlie groans as she drags Taylor inside with her to follow her big sister. 'Teenagers.' She murmurs, imitating her mother as closely as possible. The younger twins follow close behind, excited to get to know someone new.
While Kristine cleans her arm Taylor's interrogated intensively by Kari and Kim, and although Karlie would never admit to it she's pretty curious as well.
5 minutes and one tiger printed bandaid later the Klosses know everything there is to know about Taylor. She's 11-nearly-12, she likes kittens a lot, she has a younger brother and her favourite colours are gold and Christmas.
'Christmas isn't a colour though.' Kristine objects causing Taylor to shake her head ferociously. 'Yes it is! It absolutely most certainly is.' Karlie quickly nods in agreement.
'Whatever. Karlie you and your weird friend-' 'Taylor!' 'Yes, Taylor and yourself can go play outside again now.' 'But it's dark outside.' Karlie and Taylor frown. 'Which makes it even more fun to play hide and seek.' Kristine arguments, leading the girls to the hallway, out the door. 'Have fun!' And with that the door's slammed shut, leaving the two girls on the house's front step.
' My mom gets home soon. She'll make us hot coco.' Karlie promises as they make their way back into the scary dark forest. Taylor lets out a soft cheer for the hot coco before taking Karlie's hand, causing the younger girl's cheeks to heat up slightly.
'It's dark.' Taylor reasons cautiously. 'I mean not that I'm scared.' 'It's okay, I'm kind of scared too.' Karlie lies in an attempt to make Taylor feel better and maybe to make sure Taylor doesn't stop holding her hand anytime soon. She's not really sure why the handholding feels nice though she guesses it's because Taylor's hands are warm, and a little bigger than her own. And maybe she is kinda scared as well.As they mindlessly wander the forest, Karlie's pace notably faster and less hesitant than Taylor's, the older girl begins to worry more and more with each turn they take and every tree they pass.
'What if we get lost, Karls.' Taylor says shakily, squeezing Karlie's hand. 'We won't I promise.' Karlie responds lightheartedly. 'We'll be fine, Tay.' Suddenly they hear a car's engine and see its headlights appear revealing how close to a road they'd been. 'It's my mom!' Karlie announces happily, dragging Taylor with her towards the slow driving car.
Karlie's mom stops driving and opens the car's window. 'Hey Karls, who's your little friend?' Taylor's hand quickly leaves the warmth of Karlie's to disappear behind her back. 'Oh I'm Taylor, ma'am and thanks for calling me little. I've never been called that before.
Karlie's mom chuckles. 'You're welcome, Taylor. Now get in you two, it's getting dark out.' The girls quickly get in the backseat, their hands somehow finding each other again. Taylor notices Karlie's mom curiously eyeing them, specifically their hands, through the rear view mirror. Karlie doesn't notice though, as she gazes out the window, her thumb mindlessly making shapes on the back of Taylor's hand.
'So Taylor, where do you live?' Karlie's mom breaks the silence. 'Oh on the Christmas tree farm.' 'Sounds like fun!' Taylor nods. 'It's pretty fun. I like the woods better though.' Taylor smiles at Karlie.
'You know I just think it's great Karlie made a friend so soon. You see before we moved here-' 'Mo-om.' Karlie stops her. 'Alright alright. Let's just say I'm happy Karlie found a nice girl to be friends with.' Karlie's mom states, parking the car next to the cabin.
'I'm happy too.' Taylor whispers to herself as she gets out the car._____
