CHAPTER ELEVEN ROOFTOPS
mike touched his lips gently, grazing his padded thumb across his skin where el had kissed him. or had he kissed her? he wasn't sure, just certain he knew it felt right. and also very soft.
el had left mikes house almost immediately after, mumbling that her father would be waiting for her. mike let her go, although he didn't want to, because he knew she would pay for it if she wasn't home when her father arrived. he knew by the bruises all over her.
his karate class had started like usual that morning, with lucas actually turning up even after he had proclaimed he quit at least a hundred times in the past few months. el had not shown up, which mike made sure to mention when he saw her next. the boys followed steve's motions and shouted grunts as they did different poses and moves. mike was preoccupied, of course, by the tingling he felt on his lips that lingered of el. it was only the day before- well, 16 hours ago, (not that he counted) and his insides were a pile of mush that he felt only el could fix.
by the end of the lesson, the dojo was buzzing with students spraying deodorant and hollering out to each other. mike quickly grabbed his duffel bag, trying his best to avoid lucas as he really didn't want to-
"mike! how did your date go?" lucas called out as he jogged down to catch up with him, who was pushing the glass doors that lead to the parking lot.
mike couldn't help but grin, "yeah, it was okay."
"okay? it must've been more than okay you've been off with the fairies today." lucas teased as he poked at mikes arm.
mike shrugged, he really didn't want to tell lucas he and el kissed, he wanted it to remain his little secret- something he could clutch onto and have all to himself, as selfish as it sounded. the boys chattered a little more, mostly containing of lucas trying to get into max's pants or vice versa, but mike wasn't fully listening anyway. he just wanted to go home so he could visit el.
mikes mother picked him up not long after, a cigarette wafting around in her hand as she drove with the other. mike didn't speak, just looked out the window watching the buildings pass by like quick flashes of colour when he eventually recognised the powerlines that sat behind his house. finally. mike jumped out of the car with his bag, and quickly ran into the house, jogging up the staircase and into his room, dumping his heavy bag on his bed. he scrambled to the window, to peak outside and see if el's fathers car was in sight. no car.
mikeran back down the staircase and put the front door, hearing his mother faintly yell out to him but not caring. he jogged across the road, making sure to try and be as quiet as possible as he approached the fence to el's backyard. the overgrown grass reached up to his pelvis, making it a little difficult to climb over the fence. but alas, he did. he tumbled into her backyard with a yelp, clutching his shoulder which he had landed on. that will be a nasty bruise, he thought. but mike couldn't find it in himself to care, he just wanted to see her. el.
