CHAPTER NINE ARE WE JUST TERRIFIED ?
spring break was over within a blink. it had come and gone all the while giving mike love and heartbreak at the same time. the people at hawkins high were the same as he last remembered. some with slightly different haircuts or a new sweater they probably got for easter- mike included. he blended in with crowd when he first walked in alongside dustin, who was blabbering about a arcade game mike couldn't care to know the name of.
his science teacher, mr clarke, stood outside the classroom with a mug of tea- mike knew he didn't like coffee- and a kind smile on his face.
"welcome back boys." he invited them kindly, leaving a space for them to pass by him and enter he class.
"hello my lord." dustin nodded as he walked in.
mike simple mumbled, tossing hair out of his eyes. "hey."
they had allocated seats, continuing on from before the spring break. mike sat in the middle, towards the left, and dustin sat in the front row. there was a girl named mary who usually sat beside mike, with dark red hair that was always pulled back into a tight bun, and bugged eyes covered by glasses.
she had a massive crush on mike from ever since he could remember. he didn't understand why, as he had only ever exchanged a few words with her, and was mostly weirded out by her. so when she sat beside him, thumping her books on the desk like she usually did, mike huffed.
mary broke the silence between them, smiling brightly at him with her crooked and discoloured teeth. "hi mike! how was your break? did you eat lots of chocolate? i sure did!"
"i'm not big on easter." he mumbled, feeling sorry for the girls unpleasant looking teeth. he just felt bad for mary in general, most people picking on her for being in he drama club.
"that's too bad!" she said over-joyously, shrugging her shoulder. "wait, you do karate right?"
"yeah." he said softly, his eyebrows dipping.
"wow, i bet you're strong....like bruce lee!" she exclaimed, leaning her chin into her palms as she turned towards him.
mike shrugged once more, his lips tightly shut. god, why does she like me so much? why can't this be el?
mary noticed how mike seemed to be in a daze, and lifted her glasses to rest on her head. "you feeling okay?"
"i'm fine. i just had an argument with someone...close to me." he told her, playing with a stray string from his sweater.
