CHAPTER TEN
RIVER OF NO RETURN

lucas sinclair sat cross legged on the old sofa of the wheeler basement, a comic book in his hand, but was looking up at mike- whom paced the room up and down.

"mike would you stop? what are you even stressed about?" the boy asked with a perfectly raised eyebrow, adjusting his jean shorts so his shirt would stay tucked in.

"it doesn't matter." mike snapped, standing over lucas who sunk back into the sofa.

"it clearly does." he mumbled.

"it doesn't!" the wheeler boy argued back in a childish bicker, his cheeks and chest flushing.

lucas frowned. he had noticed mike had been acting strangely since spring break, and was almost certain he knew why. "it's a girl isn't it."

"no."

"it is."

"shut up!"

"do i know her?" lucas pushed, crossing his lean arms over his chest.

"no." mike sighed in defeat.

"then it won't matter if you tell me right?" his friend asked, still raising an eyebrow in confusion of why mike was so flustered over a simple question.

he sighed, slumping down on the sofa beside lucas, and pulling a pillow over his chest to hug. "this girl is coming over tonight."

"and?" lucas pinned.

"and i don't...i...i don't know how to ask her out." mike finished, resting his chin on the pillow clutched in his arms.

"is his the girl from across her street wills been telling me about?" the sinclair boy questioned, beginning to piece things together.

mike quickly retaliated, and leaped off the sofa. "what? no!"

the boys where interrupted by mikes mother hollering down the staircase. "lucas your dads here!"

the boy scoffed, combing a hand through his thick coiled hair. "i thought i was walking home?"

"apparently not." mike laughed innocently, snorting a little- a habit he was infamously embarrassed of.

lucas huffed, but his voice seemed more sympathetic. "tell me how it goes at karate tomorrow, okay?"

"okay."
