It had been a lovely Christmas morning, although no presents had been shared or no fine breakfast eaten, spending the early hours in the queerest of places had raised their spirits placed a smile on the five March girls faces, as well as a slim curl of the lips from Marmee.

The Hummels were struggling, so much so, that the children were crying and the fireplace burnt out when the March family arrived.

"Mein gott! It is good angels who come to us." The young mother, Ms Hummel exclaimed as the rosy cheeked girls came in one by one.

It was almost saddening, for young Abigail, to see much happy exchanges between the two sets of five children, from wildly different backgrounds, for she knew this could be the calm before the storm, the worst was yet to come for the dear Hummel family.

After hours of laughing and bringing happiness to the once dull shack, the five girls and their mother bid their goodbyes and walked in a giddy way back to their home.

When they arrived back to the family home, Abigail took a glance at the house across from her, she hadn't seen much of Laurie since the party, and she thought it would be quite awkward if he knew that she had discovered the true translation behind his french slur, so she simply let it be.

"Is it fairies?" Amy exclaimed with wide eyes upon entering the house.
"Santa Claus." Beth mused, walking towards the culinary bliss that was the dining table.

"No! It's old Aunt March!" Jo said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"Mr. Laurence sent it." Hannah answered with her crooked smile.

Meg gasped. "The Laurence boys grandfather? Why?"

"He saw you giving your Christmas breakfast away and wanted you to enjoy the day."

With that the March girls ran to the window to observe the old mans home.

"But I thought he was a mean old man!" Amy looked surprised.
"That's so generous of him!" Marmee beamed, serving some of the delectable food.

"Don't you see!" Abby gushed. "Teddy must've put the idea into his head, I know he did. Girls we must make better friends with him!"

"I think you're in love Abby!" Meg said teasingly. (a/n if you get this quote i love you)

"Take that back!" Abigail countered.

"Never!"

The two girls rushed around the room, one laughing and giggling, the other red faced and embarrassed.

"I don't blame her." Amy sighed. "Doesn't Laurie just seem so romantic? He's half Italian."

"And apparently French." Meg uttered, causing Abby to jab her side.

"Aww Abs, how is mon ange going anyway?" Jo said, joining in on the teasing.

"Girls! That's enough! I may have not organised the breakfast, but I do have another surprise." Marmee called.

"A letter! Is it a letter!" Amy almost screamed as her mother nodded.

Getting comfy by the easy chair, the five girls hung off of every word their father had to say, even if it was just ink on paper.

"Brava! Brava!" The girls cheered as their mother finished reading.

"What a brave soul!"

...

"Do you think that Mr. Laurence will give us breakfast again tomorrow?" Amy said from her cosy cott.

"Now now Amy, don't greedy." Meg called from her own.

"I think we'd have a better chance of being on the old souls good side if we befriended Laurie." Abby proposed, sitting cross legged on the vanity chair.

"I quite agree with you." Jo replied.

"I didn't know you took a liking to the boy." Abigail mused.

"I don't, I'll just never get over my disappointment in not being a boy, and he's the closest thing we've got to one."

"I'd to break it to you Josephine, but he is one," Amy crooned. "And he's a rather handsome one too."

"Oh Amy! You shouldn't think of such things! You're so young!" Meg chided.

"Yeah! well i'm a proper young lady with opinions, and I think we should try to make friends when we see him." Amy said decidedly, with a slight nod.

Abigail smiled, flopped onto her little bed and rolled over, happy that her sisters wanted to befriend the young boy too.

...

knock!

Abigail was awaken for the second time that night, first by Amy, who had rushed past to go to the bathroom, and now a snowball hitting the window.

knock!

gee they're persistent

Abby thought at first it would be a neighbourhood cat causing ruckus, but upon further investigation, the young Laurence boy could be seen waiting below.

"Hello!" He said joyously.

"What are you doing up at this hour!" Abby called down through the window to the giddy boy who was up at an obscenely late time.

"Oh, just walking, until I saw your sister walk past the window." Laurie said, surprisingly happy considering the dark bags beneath his eyes, which when Abigail took a look at, she also noticed the slight puffiness in them.

"I don't suppose you would join me." He asked.

"Oh I couldn't!"

"You're no fun!"

Abigail huffed and gave in, slipping on her boots and putting her winter coat over her night gown. After tiptoeing down the stairs and rushing out the front door, she was greeted by Laurie who had waiting for her.

"Hello mon ange." He said happily, yet with such a sad expression held on his face.

"I don't understand you," Abby suddenly exclaimed. "you speak so gayly but look so sad."

Laurie just took a sharp breath and offered his hand. "I shall try to be better looking company, if you'll have me." He said with a grin.

"I will gladly take a stroll with you Teddy." The young girl replied before taking his arm as they set off down the street at twilight.
