Vanya Hargreeves wasn't special

Vanya Hargreeves wasn't special. As said by her adoptive father many times. Enough for her to believe that it was true, she had no super strength, no mind altering tricks up her sleeve, she was mediocre at best with the Violin, her only real passion.

She was just Ordinary. Extra Ordinary.

Even so, she felt special whenever Josette was around, her sister that wouldn't hesitate to give her the time of day after a stressful mission, the one that bought her her first music sheets and taught her how to throw a decent punch.

She felt genuinely special when Josette fought for her, defending her from the metal abuse of their father, one of many times she's argued Vanya Hargreeves is "Special".

Even if it cost her, Josie never backed down from being by Vanya's side. At the end of the day, Josette was always the one to put a smile on her face.

To make her feel included, apart of the family.

Vanya was at home once, alone in the house while the Umbrella Academy was on a rescue mission, she was gloomy practicing a song from the list Josie had bought for her, one of a few birthday gifts the girl had gotten for her.

On their 15th birthday, she recalled bawling like a baby, squeezing her sister tight, sobbing messily before Josette calmed her, both a crying mess, offering to help her learn despite knowing little about music notes. Everyone else was so busy celebrating each other, she had been forgotten, but Josie had bought a few things for her, the only person who really thought of her.

She wished Josie was here, she hadn't seen anyone but Grace and Pogo for a few days, she wondered how the mission was going, she'd be lying if she said she wasn't worried. What if something happened to Josie? What if she didn't come back? So many scenarios in her head, it sent Vanya into a loop, she stopped playing, the music cutting down and she began to put the violin away.

"--an-ya!" There was a static call. Then it cut off abruptly.

Vanya froze at the sound, pausing. What was that?

"Van-ya!" It was Josie! She perked up, scrambling off the edge of her bed. "--an-ya!"

She was running for the desk drawer, pulling it out, Josette's voice got louder, clearer, "Vanya!"

"Josie!" She answered, happily into the walkie talkie.

Vanya's heart swelled as a smile bloomed onto her face, her sister giggled, pleased. "Van, you won't believe how crazy this mission is getting! These guys are running for the hills!" She snickered across the line, her voice filled with low static, obviously she was moving.

Vanya hummed, interested. She smiled, "I know you guys can take 'em!" She was pumped, she hasn't had Josie do this in a while. When Josette found out how hard it was for Vanya at home, she gave her a walkie talkie for when she was on missions. This was one of the ways that Vanya could, technically, be her partner without physically going on a mission, if it was too dangerous. "Where are you?"
