Anna Haris, brother to Rykor and princess of Gloann, POV:
After the conversation with my mom, me and your brother are tied up in each others arms, him in utter shock and me bawling my eyes out. I'm thinking to myself over and over again how much I hate this day. It's the day Silas left me to return to his post in Brinn, it's the day I begin to lose hope for my brother's marital happiness, I'm aching I'm tired and I'm in a bad mood. And my mom just died right in front of me.
"Why....why....." I mumble incoherently against Rykor's armor.
"What do you need?" He asks.
"I need my mom!!!" I shout angrily, eyes flashing gold.
Rykors eyebrows lift in concern, but he's seen me lose control several times so he knows it's best to just stay out of it. I push away from him. "Dad died! Orad (my eldest brother) was killed! I've lost so many friends and so many acquaintances I've lost track. Rykor. I need her."
He gives me a small grin and nods, tears forming in his eyes. "Me too, Anna."
I open my arms and he embraces me, trying his best to comfort me but clearly having no clue how to. I was always so close to her, so I know I'm taking this harder than he is.
"I need to be alone now." I say after a moment of breathlessness.
"Okay..." he approves. "If you're still gone after sundown I'm sending a search party. No more chances. Not now."
I look at him sadly, completely crushed. "I'm not even going to tell you you're overreacting," I mutter quietly, "not after so many have been killed." I walk away to my room and sob, leaning against the balcony, overlooking the courtyard. "Mom," I croak, "please. I need to know why....I need you back..." a sudden burst of energy flows through my veins and a golden light flashes out, lighting up the evening sky.
"What was that???" I say out loud, after I've dimmed. I look at my shaking hands and see a soft glow at my fingertips. As the glow deepens, a misty light emits, forming a small dragon. I know without a doubt that this is my deceased mother. I reach out, but the dragon dances just beyond my reach. The dragon breathes out a golden flame, which molds into the words "I'll find you the truth." And then she disappears.
Suddenly I feel a pain in my head and an image appears, one where I am in the marketplace. I see Silas, who makes my heart skip a beat, and he turns in my direction, staring right through me, as though I was invisible. He's wearing dark clothing, with red lining. I know he'd die before changing out of his blue and silver uniform, so I'm thoroughly confused.
I see him talking to a dangerous looking man, who has a bird perched on his shoulder. Silas looks back from my direction towards the guy and continues heatedly discussing something. But he keeps glancing in my direction, like he can sense a presence there but doesn't see anything. After a minute the nasty looking dude looks back at me, following Silas's gaze. He narrows his eyes and looks confused, but after a second he looks REALLY angry. I try to back away because his glare is so intense but I'm frozen in place.
Fortunately, he turns back towards Silas but I see him unsheathe a dagger at his belt. "SILAS!" I scream, trying to warn him, but nothing comes out of my mouth. The bad dude directs the dagger right by Silas's gut, just out of sight from passing citizens. He whispers something with a menacing expression, and whatever he said makes Silas's eyes widen and he clenches his jaw. He nods, but doesn't look happy about whatever he's consenting to.
The dude prods Captain Silas with the knife into a small hut nearby in the marketplace, and my vision shifts into the hut with them. There are three more people, all dressed as the assassins who kidnapped you last week were, and two immediately grabbed his arms and twisted them behind his back. The other disarmed him of all weaponry.
The original bad guy, who now wore a very smug grin, says softly but loudly enough that you could hear, "congratulations, you're our best shot." And proceeds to stab him in his side.
