Shadow twisted and the red sneaker soared past his head by inches. Sonic barely had time to snarl in frustration before a strong hand gripped his ankle in the air and interrupted him mid-kick, leaving Sonic unable to pull back his leg, making him lose his footing and balance. The black hedgehog smirked in a nasty way just as Sonic's eyes widened as the collared hero realized in what kind of precarious position he was in now.

"You wouldn't-"

"I will."

And then Shadow hit Sonic in the face to shatter the rest of his balance before he simply twisted, using his own body momentum to swing the blue hedgehog around at his leg like a hammer at the Olympics, and then loosened his grip at just the right time to send the collared hedgehog crashing against the castle stone.

"Hmmph. Pathetic as always..."

But avarice had always come before the fall and Shadow had never expected the next move.

The black hedgehog had flung Sonic headfirst into the corner, yes. But peach arms had caught their owner as soon as Sonic had touched ground, the blue hedgehog turning the momentum of his crash into a breakdance-like twist on the floor, lithe legs coming around to connect with Shadow's knee in split seconds. And to Sonic, Shadow's scream as he collapsed was almost music.

"Still 'pathetic', you stuck-up...faker?" The blue hedgehog managed from where he had flipped onto his feet again, wiping blood from a split lip off his face with the back of his glove.

Shadow, in the other corner of the room where he had rolled to to catch his fall, winced and screwed up his face as he forced his damaged leg to support his weight again. At Sonic's insult, however, crimson eyes opened again and blazed as cold as light on a frozen blade.

"That, my pet, was a serious mistake."

Chaos Energy hissed as hover skates flared into murderous life.

Sonic swallowed, hard. "I'm not-"

Shadow charged.

It was maybe a tenth second slower than Sonic himself, but the almost red-glowing aura around the Ultimate Lifeform ensured that it was just as frightening. A punch grazed Sonic's side as he ducked away and a defensive sideways kick into Shadow's direction was blocked by another one, Chaos fire from the underside of the dark one's shoes burning blue fur on a thigh, forcing a cry of pain from the collared hedgehog.

"Aah! That's cheating!"

"It's not cheating if you're using the same evasive tactics over and over again and expect me to fall for them every time," Shadow drawled, looking coldly down at Sonic who was bent over, pressing a hand on his burnt leg and glaring daggers up at him. Shadow smirked.

"We've been fighting each other for years, Sonic. I know every single predictable trick in your book by now. You can't win this, so why don't you submit to your collar, crawl back under your ring and stop trying to-"

A knee connected with Shadow's stomach brutally.

"Stop underestimating me, Shads," Sonic managed in between ragged breathing as it was the black hedgehog who was bent double now, "It would save you a whole lot of hurt."

The balled fist hit the blue hero's solar plexus so fast even Sonic couldn't have dodged. Stars of over-strained pain receptors streamed into the vision of the staggering speedster, Sonic powerless as Shadow finally up-righted himself and, wheezing, twisted a peach arm painfully onto Sonic's back.
