"We are not doing this."

"Tough stuff. We are."

"Trouble in paradise, boys?" Rouge gave a fanged grin as she set down her fruit bowl on the breakfast table, turquoise eyes flicking from Shadow (currently hunched over his muesli and staring at the raisins as if swearing personal vengeance) to Sonic (draped sideways over his chair and eating enough cold pizza for breakfast to make dieters cry the world over).

"No," Sonic said at the same time that Shadow went "Yes."

At the white bat's raised eye ridge, Shadow sighed and pinched the skin over his nose.

"Sonic is of the opinion we should go on a date with our doppelgangers."

Rouge made a very undignified noise into her fruit bowl at the same time that Sonic finally flipped right-side-up and tapped his finger on the table energetically.

"No, no, no. Not a real date, obviously. But a practice one. Come on, Shads, they both gotta learn how to treat someone else right and you know it!"

"Oh, uh. Okay," Rouge blinked, frowning. "So, basically, like...yesterday? You both take your doppelganger and try and teach them...good manners, this time?"

"Not quite," Sonic drummed his fingers. "Like, I was thinking this time I take Shadow's double and he can take mine. I mean, can you imagine what two Shadows on a date would be like?"

"If you laugh now, Rouge, I am ending our friendship."

"Who, me?" Rouge replied, though the edges of her mouth were noticeably twitching as she carefully avoided the gaze of the black hedgehog. "So what, you were thinking having a sort of double date? Where?"

"Well, not exactly a double date. I was thinking separate. Like, we're both pretty recognizable, the tabloids would freak if they saw us with two lookalikes," Sonic explained as Shadow glanced up, looking slightly surprised. "Yeah, so, I was thinking I'll take the Grinch Prince to Westopolis, you and blanket-me can go to Station Square, and then we teach them how partners should treat each other. Sound good?"

"Sounds insane."

"I dunno, Shadow, I think it could be a good idea, technically," Rouge said, pursing her lips. "You show their Sonic what decent treatment is like and Sonic tells their Shadow when he is overstepping his bounds."

"This is not fair. You're...you're my friend. You're supposed to ally with me."

"D'aw," Rouge said, rising from the table and patting Shadow's arm at the complaint with a mock-soothing tone (though Sonic thought he had just briefly seen her expression go slightly softer at Shadow using the f-word so barely without hesitation). "I'm sorry, honey, but I actually do agree with Sonic. From what the fox kid techno-babbled this morning, I think he wanted to say that the machine will be ready tomorrow, so you'll have to spend at least another day with them. And if you spent it with physical training again, I'm afraid you might kill them."

Shadow groaned. "Rouge, he's supposed to be me and currently he has the defensive capabilities of a Mars bar. A day like yesterday was like a regular Thursday during my childhood aboard the ARK."

"Yeah, and a day like yesterday was also like a regular Thursday during my skipping class back in Green Hill," Sonic nudged Shadow in the side with a grin. "C'mon. They ain't quite weapons of mass destruction yet, but they're doing well."
