Sweet Dreams

You were awakened in the middle of the night by a loud, rhythmic noise coming from outside. At first you were confused as to what it might be, but soon realized it was the harsh sound of rain pouring down onto the roof, combined with a howling wind.

You checked the time on your phone. 3:27am. Considering storms were rather rare in LA, you weren't used to waking up to one.

You felt Billie begin to twitch and whimper in her sleep next to you, probably triggered by all the noise. Her tourettes and a variety of other sleep issues made it hard for her to sleep peacefully through the night, which you were well aware of. You couldn't count the number of times she'd woken up sweating from a bad nightmare or accidentally punched you in her sleep.

She was your best friend and the love of your life though, so you didn't mind the random bruises that often appeared on your body the following morning.

You pulled her closer into you and rubbed your hand over her back, in a way that almost always soothed her. Sure enough, her whimpers began to quiet as she nestled her head into your chest, falling back into a deep sleep.

Just as you were about to drift off as well, however, a particularly loud roll of thunder shook the small house, causing Billie to practically jump up out of your arms with wide eyes and a fearful expression.

You noticed that she seemed to be hyperventilating too as you sat up to comfort her.

"N-nightmare." She explained between pants.

You sighed and pulled her into a hug, resting her head on your shoulder as you held her against you, feeling her heart pump loudly against your chest. You were immediately glad that you had agreed to spend the night tonight, especially since her parents were gone on a work trip, leaving her in her house alone.

You couldn't stand the thought of not being right next to her whenever she woke up scared or disoriented like this.

Once she was calm and her heartrate had returned back to normal, you laid back down with her, hoping the third time was the charm and that she'd be able to sleep free of any disturbance.

No such luck.

A few minutes later you felt her body tense up again, followed by a small gasp as she became conscious.

You rolled over to turn on the lamp, realizing it was improbable that either of you would be getting any more sleep tonight.

When you flicked the switch, however, the room stayed bathed in darkness. You flicked it back and forth a few times, getting the same result. Fuck. The power must have gone out.

You turned back to Billie, who was now sitting up with her face in her hands. "I can't fucking sleep, bro." Her voice came out muffled.

"Hey, it's okay, baby." You assured her, pulling her hands down so you could meet her eyes. "Do you have any candles? I think the power went out."

She nodded and went over to her closet, almost falling over as she pulled out a large box of them. Of course.

You grabbed a lighter from your purse and lit a few of the smaller ones, placing them on both the nightstand and the dresser.

It didn't provide much light, but it was better than nothing.

"I'm gonna go get you some water, okay?" You told Billie, who was back in bed scrolling through her phone. You didn't fail to notice the bags under her eyes as she nodded at you.

You padded to the kitchen to get a glass of water and carefully carried it back in the dark.

Billie put her phone down and snuggled up against you as you handed it to her, her heavy eyes staring off into nothingness as she raised the glass to her lips.

It was obvious that she was still extremely tired, but too scared to go back to sleep. It wasn't the first time that this had happened, and surely not the last, but you were happy to take care of her.

You grabbed your phone and connected it to the bluetooth speaker, settling for some Frank Ocean. Music always seemed to be helpful. After a few moments you got an idea and gingerly took Billie's hand, pulling her up off the bed with you.

"Dance with me?" You asked with a soft smile.

She gave you a small grin in return and wrapped her arms around your waist while yours went to drape over her shoulders.

You stared into each other's eyes for a while as you swayed slowly to the music, admiring how the candle-lit room reflected in each of your faces. Eventually you closed the space between your bodies, Billie's head ending up buried in your neck again as you breathed in the sweet smell of her shampoo, your fingers softly caressing her hair.

It felt like only minutes had passed when you noticed a bit of light peeking through the edge of the dark curtains, signaling that the sun had begun to rise. It was still cloudy and raining, but the intensity of the storm had thankfully passed.

You peeled yourself away from Billie, reaching up and tucking a strand of her green locks behind her ear. "Do you think you can sleep now, baby?"

She nodded droopily and you helped her back into bed, making sure she was comfortable and blowing out all the candles before you slid in next to her.

The two of you ended up peacefully tangled in each other's arms, sleeping well into the afternoon.
