*the next morning

I began packing as my mother told me to.

"You almost done Jason asked peeking his head into the guest room.

"Not yet I said still packing. "Well, when you're done my mom wanted to have a family breakfast then drop you guys at the airport afterward he told me before leaving the room.

Once I had finally finished packing I grabbed my things and carried them.

I peeked into the room Lloyd was sleeping in. No one was there so I made my way downstairs.

"Goodmorning everyone I greeted making everyone turn to me.

My Uncle David was cooking in the kitchen and Nia and Lloyd were at the table playing with toys while everyone else was sitting on the couch.

I took a seat next to Jason while my aunt and mom were talking.

"Hopefully by this summer we'll come by again my mom told my Aunt. I turned to Jason who was on his phone.

"Wassup he said now looking up at me. "You sure you'll be okay? I asked concerned.

"Of course we will. I got people that'll protect us he says reassuring me.

I sighed and made my way over to the dining table.

Hey you two, what are y'all doing I ask taking a seat across from Nia and Lloyd.

"Just playing a game she says with her cute high pitch voice.

"Breakfast is done my uncle exclaimed while turning off the stove and carrying the food to the table.

My auntie and mom began placing plates on each mat at the table.

Everyone sat at the table and began fixing their food.

"Let's do a prayer before we eat my auntie suggested.

We put our spoons and forks down and joined hands.

My uncle David started "Lord we come here today as a family to thank you for providing us with another day and this food in front of us. Lord, we hope you give us guidance and light through our days of being on this earth. We thank you, Lord, for blessing us with this life and hope to see many more days as a family. Amen

"Amen everyone repeated once he finished.

I picked up my fork and started to eat. Once everyone was done we carried our plates to the sink.

"To the car, my auntie said while giving my uncle a hug before walking out.

"Bye David my mom said giving him a hug.
"Bye Nia Lloyd said giving her a hug as well. "See you soon Jason I dab him up before grabbing my bags.

I put my luggage into the trunk and got into the car.

"All set? My aunt asked before starting the car.

We nodded as she pulled off.

I looked at photos I took on my camera while in Jamaica. Wonder what Ayana is doing right now I thought to myself.

We all sat quietly as we were about to drive on the highway.

But the highway was blocked off with yellow signs "no one can leave, turn back now" the sign read.

" BUMACLOT my mom exclaimed making me aware of the situation.

We drove around, turning corners and taking back streets trying to find a way to the airport.

Everything was blocked off and we couldn't get to the airport.

We turned around and went back to the house.

I grabbed my bags and headed back inside the house. "What happened? Uncle David asked confused.

"We can't leave! Everything's blocked off my mom exclaimed frustrated.

We turned on the news to highways lined up with cars trying to get out New York.

"Tonight will be the start of the first annual purge. All stores are starting to close down while this event begins in 6 more hours. The Purge, an annual 12-hour event from March 21 at 7:00 PM to March 22 at 7:00 AM where all crime, including murder, becomes legal throughout the United States. Let god be with you all, The Newporter concludes.

My auntie turned off the tv putting her hands over her mouth. "What are we going to do my mom desperately said dropping to the floor.

"We get through it I heard Jason speak up. "I got people that'll help us out he added.

He went into the closet pulling out a big black duffel bag setting it on the dining table. He unzipped it and opened it for us to see.

"Jason- "yes ma I'm involved in some crazy shit but I promise we'll get through it. He promises.

My uncle pulled out guns and weapons from out the bag setting them on the table.

I turn around to Lloyd and Nia getting on my knee "Hey, what about you guys go upstairs and play with some toys okay?

They nod and made their way upstairs.

I picked up a gun, it had some weight. I started practicing how to hold it.

"my guys will be over soon. For now, let's start securing the house Jason said getting things for the house.

I opened the sliding back door leading to outside and went outside with the gun.

I started testing how to shoot but I dropped it every time I pulled the trigger.

I heard the door slide open and close. I didn't turn around, I continued practicing on my shooting.

Here let me help you I heard a voice speak up from behind me.

I picked up the gun as the person got behind me.
"It's all about control Jason said putting his hands over mines. He angled my hands so I could have more control over it. "Now shoot.

I pulled the trigger and this time it didn't fall.

"Thanks, I smiled looking at him.

We gotta get prepared for the worse...
