In the next few weeks, May found it increasingly difficult to be the same room as Jack. Since airing her true feelings, she had been unable to look at him directly or even maintain a normal conversation with him without wanting to blurt it all out. It was because of this, she doubled her efforts to be a good girlfriend to Jessie and took him out on expensive dates.
She also did girly things with Amanda, such as shopping, movie and makeover days and even baking, to take her mind off the current situation.
One particularly memorable time was when the two friends decided to make cupcakes. They were in the kitchen preparing the ingredients when Steve walked in.
"Hey, Ma... Daisy." He caught himself at the last moment. He'd never really had experience of secrecy, so wasn't always the best at it.
"Hi, Steve." She smiled but gave him a warning look to keep his mouth shut. "Have you met Amanda?"
"No, I haven't had the pleasure." He came over to her and held out his hand. "Steve Rogers."
"Amanda took it, her face turning very pink "Yeah. I know. You're Captain America."Once they broke the handshake, Steve asked: "So, what are you two making?"
"Cupcakes. Wanna help?"
"Sure."
They spent the rest of the afternoon in the kitchen. They laughed considerably hard when Steve, who still wasn't completely used to modern technology, had accidentally turned the mixer up far too high, covering himself in icing sugar. He went to change them, still laughing at how the white in his hair made him look like an actual old man.
"Does he live here too?" Amanda asked when she'd calmed down.
"No, not technically. He has his own apartment but his pretty much always here.""That is so cool. Do you ever hang out with him?" May contemplated for a second about how much to tell her. "Yeah sometimes. I've had a few workout sessions with him."
"Really? You've worked out with an Avenger, in the Avengers's training room?" May nodded "Awesome. Can I see it?"
"I don't see why not."When they had finished frosting the cupcakes, May took Amanda to the training room. Thankfully most things had been cleared away, leaving it looking like any normal gym.
"Do you ever use any of the Avengers's stuff, like the Captain's shield or the Iron man suit?""Steve has let me hold his shield but Tony would kill me if I ever touched his suits."
That wasn't strictly true. Tony had allowed her to try out his blasters and thrusters. She found it very interesting how different being held in the air by blasts of flame was to her, more natural way of flying. It was pretty cool to be able to blast beams of energy out of her hands though.
Steve returned later that evening and after enjoying some cupcakes, along with Tony, Pepper and Bruce, showed Amanda a few basic self-defence moves. All in all, it was a very fun day, which took her mind off both the situation with Jack and the mission.
The thing was though, she suspected Jack was starting to notice her strange behaviour towards him. Before she had been friendly with him but all of a sudden she was being incredibly standoffish.
Everything became abundantly clear one day after Glee Club practice. They had just been dismissed and they were all in the process of collecting their things when Jack said "Daisy could I have a word please?"
"Sure." May felt a lump rise in her throat but forced it back down again, determined to act normal.Jessie and Amanda reached the door before they realised the other two weren't with them. "You two coming?" Jessie called.
"We'll catch you up," May replied, waving them on. Once everyone was gone she asked, "What's up?"
"Have I done something to upset you somehow?"
"What do you mean?" She thought playing dumb would be her best option.
"In the past few weeks, I've felt like you've barely said two words to me and you hardly look me in the eyes."
