"Are you gonna stop reading that dumb thing?" Luna asked me. I didn't respond as I flipped to the third page of Cassidy's diary for what felt like the millionth time. It's been a week since we read it. I've been obsessed ever since.
"Kyle!" Luna demanded.
"Look, look, I'm sorry. But there's just so much to unpack here..." I traced Cassidy's words with my finger. Today I killed Cheryl, it simply said with no other explanation. But why? Where did the potion she drank even come from? And was Candy really the twins' aunt? When Cassidy says she killed Fudge in the most brutal way she could imagine, what could that mean? These thoughts furiously buzzed in my mind if I read her words again. Today I killed Cheryl. Today I killed Cheryl.
"Come on, Kyle." Luna crossed her arms. "It's just a dumb diary."
"Sure..." I mumbled as I flipped to the page after in Cassidy's diary. Blank. What did it all mean?
"Kyle!" Luna said, stomping her foot.
"Oh my god, what do you want?" I set down the diary and looked at her. My face immediately fell when I saw she was glaring at me. "Sorry." I said quickly.
"Sure." Luna sighed. "Cassidy wants you."
"Oh come on..." I muttered.
"Sorry, but she keeps pestering me to tell you."
"Why can't she just tell me herself?" I asked. Luna shrugged. I sighed and stood up, making my way up Cherry's creaky steps to the white door that was Cassidy's room. Once I got there, instead of just opening the door, I tried to kick it open. I ended up stubbing my toe, however, and the door didn't budge. I clutched onto my foot and yelped out in pain, muttering curses under my breath soon afterward.
"Kyle?" Said a voice behind me.
"Are you okay?" Asked another. I turned around to see the Hirolf twins. They were wrapped in a blanket, and their scar was covered in multiple Mickey Mouse band-aids. Hati was stifling laughter, and Harou looked at me with round, concerned eyes.
"I'm fine." I grunted.
"Are you sure? Is there any way I can help at all?" Harou asked. Hati started to crack up.
"Did you just kick a door?" Hati asked between laughter. My face flushed and I bit my tongue.
"Yeah..." I admitted.
"Why?" Hati laughed louder. "So this is the guy who's saving us from this place, huh? I knew we shouldn't have put our trust in a little kid."
"Shut up, Hati!" Harou scolded him. "All you ever do is put people down! I don't get why you can't just be nice for once! He's only fourteen, leave him be."
"I was just messing around, Rou." Hati responded. "No need to freak out over every little thing ever. And can I just say how funny it is that you're telling me to be nice when you tried to kill-"
"That wasn't me!" Harou shouted, cutting Hati off. "But no, all you can ever do is see things from YOUR views. Because I don't matter."
"Harou..." Hati looked at the floor. "You do matter. Of course you matter. I would have gone nuts if I went through all of this without any company. But I can't just forgive you for trying to kill Lavender."
"Just shut up about Lavender already!" Harou's eyes welled up with tears. "It wasn't my choice to be possessed, you know!"
"Well it wasn't my choice to have a brother." Hati muttered.
