"It is so fucking cold here." I stood next to my brother Theodore who was pumping gas into our rundown pick up truck.
He only laughed at my complaints. "I told you Washington is cold but you decided to wear fucking shorts."
He walked off to go pay for the gas as I rolled my eyes. Stepping away from the truck I took a while to examine our new State. Everyone was kind of off to themselves and distant.
Putting my focus back on the store I noticed a guy sitting right by the door smoking and watching traffic pass by.
His clothes were baggy and kinda dirty but I thought he was cute. I honestly thought he was homeless so I took 2 Dollars out of my wallet and walked over to give it to him.
I put my hand out to give the guy the money and he just looked up at me with this funny gaze.
"It's to buy you something. It's okay, take it." I told him thinking he was scared to take my money.
"Oh I see what's happening." He mumbled and started laughing taking another drag of his cigarette.
I stood there confused and he finally broke the awkwardness by explaining himself."Thanks for the offer but I'm not fucking homeless." He continued laughing at my expression after he said that. I felt so fucking bad that I had just assumed he was homeless.
"Oh my god I am so sorry!" I apologized wanting to run away In that exact moment.
"It's no big deal, I can tell you're not from here." He motioned to my shorts that exposed my brown skin that was now ashy as hell in this cold.
I laughed it off as my brother walked out with a bag full of snacks. He saw me talking to the guy and gave him a look.
"Zoe get in the truck right now!" He ordered and I looked at him like he was crazy.
"I'm just talking-" He cut me off.
"He's no one you want to be talking to now come on kid sister!"
"I would listen to big brother." The guy made a pouty face at me then smirked eyeing my brother right back.
I listened to him and got in the car with my brother. The guy waved as we left and I waved back.
"So who was that guy?" I asked my brother as we got further down the road.
"His name is Kurt and he's an old friend that I went to school with."
"Wait how old is he?" I questioned
"Why? You gotta any slick ideas?" Theodore's tone was quite serious.
"Nevermind." I muttered
"He's 23 and that's too old for you Zoe. Don't need to hang around people like him anyways."
"Um I'm 18 and last time I checked you're not the boss of me!" We began arguing.
"You living in my house, so therefore I kinda am the boss of you. Like it or not and if I ever see you talking to him again I'll-"
"You'll what? And what on Earth did he even do for you to be acting this crazy?"
"You don't wanna know."
