INK FLOWED FROM the tip of Brandi's pen as she doodled in the margins of her paper. The darkness of night had blanketed across the town of Stars Hollow and rather than go upstairs to bed, she sat among the stragglers of the diner in tow with her close friends, Kevin and Jordie, to complete an assignment for their English class.

"I'm just saying," Jordie started, taking a fry from the plate Luke had gotten Caeser to provide them with, "if Romeo and Juliet  hadn't . . . you know, done it, then she could've married Paris and kept her whole fling a secret."

"Jordie, the whole premise of the story is about two star-crossed lovers," said Brandi, flicking the tip of her pen towards the script they had borrowed from the library. "They're supposed to be in love, it isn't some huge conspiracy."

"This isn't even on the assignment, guys," Kevin said, leaning across the table to analyse their task sheet, "we're just supposed to find connections between the play and the real world— like, common themes, I think."

"But it's just as important," Jordie rebutted, "how're we supposed to find connections if we don't have the clear picture of the plot?"

"The assignment doesn't say anything about digging deeper, though," Brandi said, dropping her pen and taking the task sheet from Kevin to look it over.

"Okay, fine, we won't," said Jordie, running a hand through his shaggy hair, "But I stand by my point that Romeo screwed up Juliet's chances of marrying Paris."

Between them, Kevin heaved a sigh, "Why couldn't we just have watched the movie?"

As Brandi's father walked by with a rag in hand, he came to a stop before their table and looked to the three of them, asking, "How's it going over here?"

"Oh, um," Jordie's voice pitched and he was quick to clear his throat, "it's going very well, uh— sir."

"Yeah, thanks for letting us study down here, Luke," Kevin said with a kind smile.

"Anytime, kids," he said, then shifted his gaze to Brandi. "Are they chipping into the workload? Or are the boys getting you to do it all?"

"We have a system," she said, gesturing to the small stacks of papers before the three of them. "Kevin does the research, I find connections from the real world and then Jordie finds connections from the play."
