Something didn't make any sense.
His world was falling apart in front of his own eyes. Where San stepped there was blood that stood out in the whiteness of the snow. In the distance he heard shrill screams, from children, women and men, who, by the connection he felt with those people, knew that they belonged to his pack. It was the apocalypse.
They were being attacked by humans again, or at least it seemed to be, San knew that the last time humans stepped into their territories, they all learned the lesson of not messing with a pack of wolves, especially the one that was in the north of lake, his pack, which was one of the biggest on that side, these humans were suicidal then, but something San didn't understand was why they were winning like that? Some humans were no match for an entire pack of wolves. It didn't make any sense. In any case, San ran in his human form, his family always had thoughts contrary to what the society in which they lived thought, it was preferable for him to remain in this form, even in winter.
However, all San could think of in this mess was his father. San thought only of his father and where he was. The old man had warned about something like this in recent years, made preparations for this day, for that he started investigating the world of humans, which worked, it is worth taking the risk to go to the city and learn about them with observations, seeing how fragile and helpless beings could build a bigger empire than strong and powerful creatures like wolves. Human beings were even seen in fear by some. But being the stubborn race that wolves are, nobody believed him, because they believed that the old man gave too much value to a race that self-destructs all the time.
"We are not so different ... Are we, Father?" Asked San while trying to understand what it was all about.
Going around the forest, San found what he was looking for. Not the way he wanted to find at least. His father, who almost never changed into the other form, that of a gray wolf with yellowish eyes, was fighting a creature that San had never seen before. It was horrendous.
They looked human, but somehow sick. With blood running down almost all of his greenish and gray skin. They did not have much hair on their bodies, and the few that did have were lifeless and colorless. San felt a shiver down his spine as the creature turned in his direction. His face was disfigured, there were holes in his cheeks that allowed vision for his rotten teeth and his swollen tongue that only allowed strangled sounds to come out of that cavity.
It was the ugliest creature San had ever seen.
"San run !!! Now! Go to your mother and brothers and escape to the bunker" His father shouted at the mental connection.
The bunker, San thought. The bunker was safe and had supplies for over ten years, there was a small pipeline of water coming from the lake. A bathroom that threw waste to the other side of the lake, and oddly enough, even electricity that San's father managed to steal from humans, with a small generator powered by something called gasoline, which despite having only a few liters, it was enough for a year or two, if they ration well. It was brilliant how his father could think of all the details of a survival plan.
But San's legs didn't move.
The creature was not very fast, it was the speed of a running human, it could easily dodge the creature, but something caught San in place. It was a terror that ran through his body, that controlled his breathing and made him hesitate. His father's voice did not reach him. The man screamed in his head and all San could concentrate on was that mouthful of teeth wanting to sink in his flesh.
When the creature was at least five centimeters away from attacking San, a wolf with reddish fur and pure red eyes threw itself in front of the boy and pulled the creature's head with its long, sharp claws, San's father sighed with relief, berating his son mentally, but the boy couldn't hear anything, just watched the horrible creature being shot down by the wolf that threw himself on it. San immediately felt his connection to the wolf, his scar behind his neck throbbed slightly and San knew what it meant, it was his mate.
