I smiled to myself as the stirred the chunks of pork belly in the well hot-cast iron pot as Tee set the table Mrs. Kerdthongtaveell supervise my work. This is what it is to have a mother, I thought. "Now taste it, Bas, and tell me what he needs," she directed.

I grabbed a clean spoon and dabbed it into the pot, then tasted. "Soy sauce- salt," I answered "just a little."
S

he raised het eyebrows, impressed, then handed me one tablespoon. " just a dash salt and it will be perfect,"  she answered.

I fit in seamlessly with the Kerdthongtaveell and sometimes daydreamed I was really a part of their family and not just houseguest. My dad was doing well in Arizona. He called me every night to check in, and sometimes he sent a check for spending money, which I was grateful to have.

With junior finished, Tee and I looked forward to a summer of fun and relaxation. I imaged we would spend our days sipping mango, passion fruit juice by the big ass pool in the backyard.

Apparently, Mrs. Kerdthongtaveell had a different idea.

"Do you have a job lined up this summer, Bas?" Mrs. Kerdthongtaveell asked as she served me crispy pork belly red curry on my plate. I hope no one could hear my stomach growling as I piled my plate high with Jasmine rice.

"Oh well, I hadn't thought about it,"  I stammered "I have my internship once a week with Texas monthly... But it doesn't pay anything.

I balance my plate carefully as I took a seat with the rest of the family at the dining room table under an  ornate Chandelier hanging from 20-feet ceiling. The house was stately and massive, decorated by Mrs. Kerdthongtaveell who had a keen eye and obsessive compulsion that nothing should be out of place. She. Liked to be in control of her surroundings a characteristic I would be familiar with later on. But now is harmless.

We were only missing Cop at the table; he was at college and hadn't been home for moths. I was grateful for his absence. Something about his dark, brooding eyes and his always serious and his always serious gaze unnerve me. He broke my heart last summer, when he made me feel like I was the dirt under his shoes. He made me feel unintelligent. I know where I come from but he didn't have to rubbed in.

I knew he didn't like me or anyone  for the matter it was much more pleasant without him. "

You can work at the hotel. Front desk. Okay?" Mrs. Kerdthongtaveell inform me, as if it had been settled already behind closed doors and this was merely a formality. She looked at Mr. Kerdthongtaveell for confirmation and he nodded in agreement, his mouth full of pork belly.
