Chapter 1

I grip the steering wheel and watch my knuckles turn white. When the horn echoes in my ear I know to start the race. I push the gas pedal as the car starts to surge forward. There were two people in front of me already, and five behind. I change gears and swerve to the right side to get past car number two. The street lights illuminated the road. I flew past them and focused on the road and cars in front of me. One more gear change and I was going faster than car number two. I passed them with ease and was now focused on car number one. My eyes narrow in on it. I can feel my heartbeat throughout my whole body. This was the rush I wanted. I see the left hand turn coming up so I make sure I get on the inside of them. He knew what I was doing so he tried to block me but failed. I drifted the turn and that put me ahead. A shallow breath escapes my lips. I changed my gears again and then went as fast as I could. I could see the finish line, it was a straight stretch. The other cars were right behind me. Just as one was about to pass me I crossed the line. I slowed down and smiled to myself. I got out as the other cars pulled up. Jake, who was in second place, looked at me and smiled.

"You've got better Talia," he said with a smirk. His tanned skin still looked perfect at night.

"Or you've gotten slower," I teased. He ran a hand through his dark brown hair and walked towards me.

"You didn't think I was slow last night" he whispered in my ear. Shivers run down my arms as I remember exactly what happened last night. I set my hand on his chest.

"Well maybe you need to show me again" I whispered back. He put his forehead on mine and looked into my eyes. I see his eyes fill with need.

"Oh the things you make me feel baby" he says pulling me into a hug. "You're the best girlfriend ever when you're not beating me in a race" Jake said pulling away. Im a little upset he pulled away.

"Don't be jealous of my skills" I chuckle.

"Let's get you home," he said, still smiling.

"Let me give Janson back his keys'' I say walking away. I make sure to move my hips extra for Jakes enjoyment. I don't have a car so Janson lets me borrow his as long as I give him some of my winning money. The race director came up to me and congratulated me, giving me an envelope of money. I thank him and walk back to find Jake. I find him sitting in his car on his phone. I get into the passenger seat and lift up his head with my fingers. I kiss his lips and then pull away a little bit. He pulls my head back and kisses my harder. I brush my hand in his hair and then pull his head away.

"Good job getting second place" I laugh putting my seat belt on. He gives me a devilish look. His green eyes burning with fire.

"Teasing isn't nice," he said, putting his seat belt on as well.

"Good thing you dont like me because I'm nice" I say back checking my phone. I had a few texts from friends but I ignored them. The car starts moving so I put it down. I get nauseous in the car if Im not looking at the road. We speed down the road and to my house. We talk during the drive. He put his hand on my thigh as he drove with one hand. I smiled to myself and looked out the side window. We arrive at my house in fifteen minutes. I get out and kiss Jake.

"Bye beautiful" he says smiling. His voice leaves a warm feeling in my body.

"Bye loser" I stick my tongue out at him. He laughs and drives away. I walk into my house to see police officers and my aunt. I pause and take in the scene. Did someone find out about illegal street racing? Everything runs through my head. The rehearsed lies, and the fake excuses. I knew nothing they didnt. My stomach churns. When I closed the front door they all looked at me. My aunt's face was red and her eyes were puffy. It was obvious she had been crying. There were four officers in the room. All of them had strong builds and pitiful looks on their face.

"Talia" my aunt whispered. Her blonde curly hair was a mess and her mascara stained her face. I slowly walked into the room.

"What happened?" I said not directed to anyone I just wanted someone to answer me.

"Ma'am I'm sorry to say this but your parents were found dead in a car along the highway. They collided with another car and both of them didnt survive" one of the officers said. The world seemed to slow down for a minute. My legs went weak. I basically fell onto the edge of the couch.

"What" was all I managed to get out. My aunt got up and sat next to me. I shoved my face into her shoulder and started to cry.

"Oh baby I'm so sorry" she said stroking my hair. My entire life just fell apart in three seconds. It's funny how this can happen. Everything seems fine and then you're broken beyond repair. I don't know what happened after that. I couldn't stop crying and my body went numb. It hadnt processed that they were gone, but my body knew to cry. I heard voices talking and my aunt standing up. I rested on the arm of the couch and closed my eyes. This couldn't be true. Me and my parents were fighting a few hours earlier.

"Talia, don't you dare leave this house" my mother said sternly.

"Why" I backfired. She couldnt tell me what to do.

"Because you never tell us what you're doing" my dad screamed. He set down his drink and stood up.

"Because you never care!" I screamed, got my phone and walked to the door. The races were tonight and Jake was here to pick me up.

"Bullshit, we always care," my mom said.

"Well then just stop. I'm seventeen years old and I'm allowed to do things!" I got more angry. They never let me do anything so I always have to sneak out.

"You're not allowed to go wherever you're going" my dad said.

"Well then I guess I'm breaking the rules again" I said opening the front door.

"One day you'll regret this" my mom said deadly calm.

"Both of you can kindly just fuck off" I said slamming the door. I see Jake waiting for me so I fix my face and slide into the car.

I can't believe the last thing I said to my parents was 'fuck off'. They were probably looking for me when they got into the crash. This is all my fault. I felt more tears slide down my face. I didnt have the most caring parents in the world. They were still my parents. My mom's blonde hair and grey eyes. I got her eyes. My dad's black hair and green eyes. I got his hair. They were inside of me. I will never forget this.
