photos are supposed to capture the soul right?

"Thank you, everyone, for handing in your last assignment on time. I've submitted your grades online and sent you copies of your feedback via email."

Frank bounced his knee impatiently, twirling his pen in his fingers as he waited for his professor to say the magical words he waited for every month or so.

"You all know how this class works so, your next assignment is-"

Franks eyes flicked back to the front of the class, pausing in his motions as he leaned forward slightly.

"To complete a set of photographs using your own ideas and themes but using the skills we've been working on in your last few assignments. You will be required to create at least one mood board along with an analysis of your final idea."

The class filled with the hum of excited chatter as everyone started bouncing ideas off of each other. However, Frank kept to himself, his body still as he stared out the window, ideas running through his mind in flickered images as he half-listened to the last of his professors instructions.

"You will have two months to complete this task. That should give you more than enough time to plan, develop and finalise your images. Your collection can be as big as you want but no less than five photos okay? Have fun, and remember to come to me with any questions."

Frank spent the last few minutes of class letting ideas wash through him, not making any effort to hold onto them. To him it was like flushing out all the shit ideas and only leaving room for the ones that would actually produce something he'd like, so he just watched the way the sun fell through the leaves and waited to be dismissed.

The idea came to Frank a few days later when he was slowly stirring his coffee and people-watching outside his favourite cafe. His notebook sat in front of him, open to a page full of scribbled out concepts and a lot of question marks but he hadn't touched his pen for a while.

With a sigh, the photography student lifted the mug to his lips and took a short sip, letting the coffee bathe his tongue before a slight rattle caught his attention. He lowered the mug and looked to his right, watching in interest as a man headed up to the door of the cafe and swung it open, the dainty sound of the bell ringing out into the afternoon air.

The rattle of pins and the flash of coloured wool brought an idea floating to the surface of Franks mind. It wasn't profound or original but it would be fun and he could do a lot with it. Pulling his notebook towards him, Frank clicked his pen and flipped to a new page, scribbling down his concept and then a few dot points for follow-up ideas.

He'd decided to do a series of candid portraits- taking photos of random people in random settings and then asking them if it was alright for him to use the photos in his project. If not, he would let them watch him delete the photo and he'd be on his way, finding someone new. To keep it interesting and to give the idea a proper theme, Frank had decided to capture the weird and wonderful parts of their town.

It had only been a week and he already had a handful of brilliant photos. There was one that showed an elderly woman in an emerald cocktail dress with a shoulder tattoo, her poodle right beside her as they stood on the corner and waited for the light to change. They'd been on the opposite side of the road and Frank just had to take their photo, so he'd carefully snapped a few shots before waiting for them to walk on over and then asking if it was okay.
