Two moons later...

Finchkit had grown. He was now developing a little more muscle and fur. He looked like a fluffy brown ball, and he was okay with that. He had forgotten about the strange dream he had had a couple moons ago. The strange tom had just stared at him, his eyes turning a cloudy color, almost as if he could see something Finchkit couldn't. Finchkit didn't discuss the event with anyone, assuming it was just a weird dream.

He padded out of the Nursery, stretching his legs. The morning was warm, the branches on the trees surrounding the camp were bright and green. A slight breeze blew through the treetops, making a comforting rustling noise. White clouds glided past in a brilliant blue sky. Nearby, Finchkit saw Otterkit and Deerkit relaxing in a patch of sunlight near the medicine den. He trotted over to where they were laying. His sisters sat up on their haunches as they heard him approach.

"Hi, Finchkit." Otterkit greeted him.

"Hello Otterkit, Deerkit." Finchkit replied. "What do you guys want to do today?"

Deerkit flicked her tail at Finchkit, "All I want to do, is lay here for the rest of the day. It's such a nice day."

Finchkit shook his head, "No, we're going to do something exciting!" He exclaimed.

Otterkit stood up, lashing her tail. Her eyes gleamed. "Yes we are! Come on Deerkit, have some fun!"

Deerkit slowly got on her paws, "Fine, but if something bad happens because of this, I'm blaming you." She muttered. Finchkit could see that her eyes also had a small shine to them with curiosity.

"Any ideas?" Finchkit asked Otterkit and Deerkit.

"Yes." Otterkit replied. "But, you have to keep it a secret. And do not let those two follow us, okay?"

Finchkit looked across the camp. Over near the Elder's Den were Fallowkit and Quailkit rustling around in the dirt. They looked like a grey ball of moss being blown around by the wind. Except for the occasional mew or squeal. Finchkit looked back at Otterkit. "Will do."

She nodded, "Okay then, follow me."

Finchkit followed Otterkit as she turned around and started walking towards the side of the Medicine Den. He watched as Otterkit slipped into a little hole that was carved out of some of the bushes and vines that surrounded the camp. Finchkit let Deerkit in before him and then he made a quick scan of the camp to make sure no one was watching. The coast was clear so he slid into the little hole where Otterkit and Deerkit had disappeared.

Once inside, Finchkit could stand up with plenty of room to spare. Ahead of him was a medium-sized den. It had some rays of sun splash on the floor, making it well lit. Otterkit was sitting towards the back of the den. Deerkit sat down near her. Finchkit padded down to where they were and sat down with them. Otterkit looked very proud of her secret spot. Her head was held high and her tail twitched excitedly.

"Wow." Finchkit breathed looking around. The roof went up quite far and the walls widened in the larger part of the secret den.

"Yeah." Otterkit said. "That's what I said when I had found this place. About a moon ago, I was exploring and saw the entrance near the Medicine den and I walked inside and it was a secret den!"

"Sh." Deerkit said. "We are kind of close to the Medicine Den, so someone might hear us."

"That's right." Otterkit said in a now hushed voice. "There is also an exit that leads outside of the camp from here."

"Really!" Both Deerkit and Finchkit exclaimed at the same time. "That's so cool!"

Otterkit nodded. "I haven't used it yet, I was waiting so that you guys could go with me."

Finchkit bounced up and down. "Then let's go!"

"Shh!" Deerkit snapped at him. "What about Rowanstep?" She asked.

"Don't worry." Otterkit replied. "She's sound asleep sunbathing with Redcall near the fresh-kill pile.

"Okay." Finchkit mewed. "But let's make this trip quick. I don't want her to wake up and realize that all of us are gone."

Otterkit nodded. She trotted over to the right side of the secret den and slipped through another small hole in the wall. Finchkit and Deerkit followed. This time, instead of the walls widening, they stayed the same, forming a small tunnel. Otterkit's tail tickled Finchkit's nose. He sneezed and was quickly hushed by Deerkit. The tunnel started to slope up and before Finchkit knew it, he was standing outside of the camp, staring into endless trees and undergrowth.

A patch of sun warmed Finchkit's back and the breeze was stronger. It blew fresh scents into his nose. Finchkit breathed in deeply, savoring all of the smells that engulfed his nose. He saw Deerkit and Otterkit doing the same. Finchkit looked around, trails crossed each other's paths ahead of them. A faint trail led them from the tunnel to another path.

"Let's follow this trail for a little while." Deerkit suggested walking over to one of the paths ahead of them.

Otterkit followed. "Sure."

Finchkit loped to catch up with his sisters, vowing silently to keep them safe while they were exploring. He looked up and it was a little while until sun-high so he decided that they would turn back a little before sun-high. The trail that Deerkit had chosen smelled stale. Finchkit could pick up the faint scents of his clanmates on the path. He smelled Brindleclaw, Shrewtuft, and Pearsun. It was hard to detect their individual scents because they were so old, but Finchkit had managed to figure it out.

"The dawn patrol must have passed by here." Finchkit stated.

"Yeah, their scents are a little stale." Deerkit agreed.

The three kits continued on their specific path for a while, winding through trees and bushes. After a while, Finchkit picked up a new scent. He had soon realized that it was another cat. But, it wasn't a ThunderClan cat. The cat smelled of rotten flesh and a strange scent that Finchkit had never smelled before. As they continued walking, the scent became even stronger.

"Do you smell that?" Otterkit exclaimed, stopping in her tracks.

Deerkit nodded, "Yeah, I don't like it."

Finchkit agreed, "How about we turn back then?"

His sisters nodded and as they turned around to head back to camp, a cat emerged from some bushes farther down the trail. Finchkit noticed that the strange cat was black and white and their sharp amber eyes punctured his. Otterkit and Deerkit froze in their tracks when they saw that the strange cat had noticed them.

"Run!" Otterkit yowled as she turned tail and started to sprint away back towards camp.
