chapter four.

"I BROUGHT FLOWERS!" Renee announced, holding a bouquet of pretty purple peonies. Elena's face brightens at the girl behind the door, taking the flowers out of her hands.

"Thank you. They're almost as pretty as you." Elena complimented, closing the door behind her, admiring the outfit she wore. "You have to let me borrow that necklace one day."

"Of course." Her hand unconsciously grazed the thick metal sun and moon necklace she wore. It was a gift, she couldn't remember from who though.

The house was warm. The smell of Chinese takeout in the air, Renee hangs her jacket on the hanger. Spending the night at Elena's house was a great distraction for her, because Caroline wasn't. She can't handle being around her at the moment, it's best if Renee does what she wants; give her space.

"Putting it in a nice bowl isn't fooling anybody." Bonnie comments, watching Elena shrug the food out of the paper bag and into a large bowl.

"Come on, pretending to cook is Elena's thing." Renee replied, moving around them and steals a pick of shredded chicken, dodging Elena's hand she pops it in her mouth.

"Like yours is stealing the food before dinner is ready." Bonnie retorts, shaking her head at their antics. Renee winks, clicking her tongue and finger shoots her in agreement.

"Ok, serving spoons. Where are the serving spoons?" Elena mumbles to herself, her body whirling around to search through her kitchen drawers.

"Middle drawer on your left." Bonnie answered, gesturing behind her to her left. Elena gave her a strange look, hesitant to find out if it were true. Renee didn't understand what was going on, being kept out of the loop between Elena and Bonnie was natural since she was always closer to Caroline but in the moment, she feels awkward.

"Ok, so you've been in this kitchen like a thousand times." Elena reasons, finding the spoon where Bonnie said.

"Yeah, that's it." Bonnie muttered to herself, not believing what she said. Renee didn't understand the big deal, so the knife was in the kitchen draw, where else was it supposed to be? The door bell rings. Great, Stefan has arrived so she won't be the only one out of the loop.

"Ok, he's here." Elena sighs heavily preparing herself, clasping her hands together. "Don't be nervous. Just be your normal loving self." She leaves to answer the door. Renee doesn't want to be nosy, so she stays silent.

Inside the dinning room, Bonnie, Renee, Elena and Stefan are eating together. The tension high and thick with a layer of awkward, forks clash against plates. Renee and Elena continuously try to ease it by talking.
