chapter five.

The morning air was heavy. The kind of tension you'd have when you done something wrong and you and your siblings were being questioned about it and you still stay silent. Renee pressed the volume higher like it could drown out the tension and sat back on the couch, a dribble of milk in her bowl spills on her sweatshirt, she ignores it for now to focus on the TV.

"I can confirm that a 12-foot puma mountain lion attacked a hunter and was subsequently shot and killed. The hunter is in stable condition." Aunt Liz stood besides Logan Fell speaking into the microphone, the bright day reflected well on her features.

Mr. Tanner died one night ago because of that puma mountain lion. Would that mean all the bite attacks will stop? That her town will finally return to normal? She can only hope. Caroline yawns entering the kitchen behind her. She bites her cheek, wondering if she should or shouldn't say what she did. If she doesn't then it'll go to waste and neither of them never liked eating day old food, they taste weird.

"I made you eggs, it's in the microwave." Renee said, keeping her eyes locked on the TV as she changed the channel for something more cartoonish before she has to leave for school in a few minutes.

Caroline wasn't surprised. Even when they're not on speaking terms she's always doing the littlest things to take care of her, it makes her feel even worse because she's doing nothing for her; not even apologising. "Oh.." Was all she could muster at first watching Renee put her shoes on at the couch. "Thanks."

The brunette doesn't say anything as she walks by her to put her bowl of cornflakes in the sink and grab her school bag. Caroline fiddles with her fingers, racking her brain to say something, anything. "Do you want a ride? I can buy you lunch, we haven't done that in like, forever!"

Her tongue wants to say yes and let the bad blood between wash away like it always does but she's still hurt, she knew her weakest points and stabbed her there without blinking. Not trusting her tongue to say no, she shook her head walking to the door. "Can't, I have plans. I'm leaving now."

"Oh wait, I could still drive you ━━ " The front door slamming closed was her response. It was like Renee could feel her pain radiating off her body, her brain begged her to turn around and hug her and forgive her and have lunch and do whatever she could to ease her pain, to make her feel better before herself. Her bones didn't move, like for those few minutes her bones fought against her brain commanding her to turn back around, instead she kept on walking and didn't turn around until she reached the school.

Then she felt like she could breath.

The first thing Renee always does is; head to her locker to exchange whatever books she doesn't need for the ones she does. With her bag perched on her thigh, she flickers her school journal to find out what class she has first. The date rang alarm bells in her head. The Founders Party is tomorrow. Oh shit, the Founders Party is tomorrow and she has nobody to suffer with or maybe they'll make it bearable this year..?
