chapter one.

LONELINESS IS A NASTY feeling. It creeps on a tiger stalking her prey, attacking when it's most vulnerable. And it clings to you, like a bitter taste on your tongue reminding you that no matter how many people you try to fill your live with, It'll always be there, lingering; waiting.

Renee has known this feeling ever since her father's corpse was lowered into the ground. He stuck with her like a ghost, never to be touched or seen ━ just felt; a whirlwind of negativity emotions. Loneliness was the strongest. It threatens to drown her like an ocean wave, hitting her when she least suspects it and on some days it's hard to fight against the waves, some days she just wants to let it suffocate her and find peace like her parents have.

But, Liz and Caroline refuse to let her drown. When either one notice her drowning they're always there to dive in and keep her head afloat. There's nothing she's ever been more grateful than them, for taking her in, loving her like she was their own and being there for her when she never asked. She could never repay them for all they've done but she tries, each day.

"Hello, do I have to crash this car so you can pay attention to me?" Caroline's voice snapped her out of her thoughts, her fingers turning the wheel to park on the school parking lot.

"No, because I wouldn't look as good as you in a neck brace." Renee replied, flashing her a sweet smile and unbuckles her seatbelt. First day back to school, she spent all last night planning her first day outfit and her smile, this year she decided to leave her hair in its natural curls instead of straightening it everyday. A minor change that makes her feel a smudge bit confident.

Caroline holds her school bag hostage getting out of the car, a smile capturing her frown handing her, her bag.  "Kissing up to me, ten brownie points already." Renee huffs a light laugh, walking with her towards the school doors. "There's going to be a lot going on this year, especially with the Founders Ball not too far away. We've got a lot of work to do."

"How do you know I'm going to compete?"  Renee inquired, her hands shoved in her jean pockets. She hadn't planned on competing this year, that was her plan until the person she was suppose to be going with broke things off with her awhile ago, and having a date is mandatory.

"Hello! I'm Caroline Forbes, I can read your mind." The blonde chimed, gesturing at her head then touching hers in a mysterious way.

She grins, her eyes drifting to the ground as they open the double doors. No matter how much she wanted to compete, there was nobody here she could see herself having a fun time with. "We will see. I'm not making you any promises."

"Renee, you will be competing if I have to build a boy from scratch for you." Caroline retorted, her tone of determination made Renee believe she actually might. "Okay, I've got to go find Elena here somewhere and you go do that thing you were meant to do."
