"No?"

Several gasps spread throughout the room and Alex's expression changed drastically. I felt my heart clench as I looked at the sadness and disappointment on his face.

"Wha- what do you mean no, Beatrice?"

"I mean no, Alex. I can't marry you. I barely even know you. Since we walked into this house, I've found multiple things that you never told me about. That you didn't trust me enough to tell me. I'm sorry, and I love you, with all my heart, but I can't marry a man who keeps secrets and lies to me. I need more time. I'm sorry," I said. His jaw locked.

"That's okay. I understand. I'm sorry you feel that way," he said coldly. He was angry. As he went to stand up, he grabbed the glass of champagne and stood. Then his face contorted and he threw the champagne on me then smashed the glass into a far wall. I stood, my mouth open in shock.

"How dare you? I've been nothing but a loving boyfriend to you and then you come here and embarrass me in front of everyone, you motherfucking bitch!" I felt the tears fall quicker, but it only got worse when his hand drew back and then flew forward, smacking me hard across the face. Many people gasped, some stood there, but only a few took action.

Suddenly, Adam was there, pushing Alex away from me. I was in complete shock. My face was throbbing. I had never seen Alex like this. Anne was now in front of me. Her face was a mixture of shock and anger.

"Oh dear. Are you alright? I'm so sorry. I have no idea what is wrong with him," she exclaimed. She tucked some hair behind my ear and I cried. I saw Benjamin push Alex out the door then follow him outside. Adam was now in front of me. He looked furious but concerned at the same time. His large hand came up to gently caress the other side of my face, then he gently put his arm around my waist.

"Come on. Let's get you fixed up, okay," he said softly. I nodded and let him lead me down a brightly lit corridor. We then walked into a large bathroom and he lifted me, as though I were only a mere pillow, and set me on the counter. I turned sideways to look at myself in the mirror while he was looking for something in the cabinet.

I stared at my reflection in horror. My mouth was agape and I felt my eyes water again. The tears fell down my cheeks rapidly. I had never imagined this happening. I was hoping to wake up and find that this was all a dream. When I awoke, I would be safely curled next to Alex in his bed. I squeezed my eyes shut. That wouldn't happen anymore. The pain was too much for it to be a dream.

I let out a sob and put my head down. Strong arms wrapped around my shoulders and pulled me closer and without hesitation, I wrapped my own arms around his torso and buried my face into his white dress shirt and bawled my eyes out.

Adam stroked my hair softly and ran his hand up and down my back in comfort. I wasn't sure how long we stood there like that, but finally I pulled back and glanced at myself in the mirror. I bit my lip and looked away. There was a split in my cheek and it was a little purple. I never thought of Alex to be that kind of guy... but this just proved that he was, and I wasn't sure how to feel about that.

"Hey," Adam said softly. He caressed my cheek and cupped my face then turned it so that I look at him. He wiped a few stray tears from my face and gave me a soft smile. "Let's get it cleaned up, okay?"

I nodded and he took an alcohol wipe from the kit and gently wiped the deep cut. I hissed at the burning but kept still. He put some medicine on it and then finished it off with a band-aid. He brushed his thumb across my other cheek wordlessly.
