Trust Issues

When I finally walked back into the bedroom, Alex was sitting on the edge of the bed. He was only in a pair of gym shorts and I paused near the doorway when he looked up at me.

"Alex, why are you-"

He stood up and walked closer to me, talking so that his words cut me off.

"Have you been cheating on me with my brother, Bea," he asked emotionlessly. My blood ran ice cold and chills flew up my spine. For the first time, I was scared he might hit me. And it hurt that I would even have to question that.

"It wasn't like that. He just-"

"He did something that you didn't want, right? If you didn't want it then why didn't you tell me," he asked, still angrily but softer than before.

"I had it handled. I didn't want you two to get into a fight over nothing. You're brothers and you especially shouldn't fight over some girl," I said. I never had any siblings, but if I did, I wouldn't want us to be like Adam and Alex. I'd want an unbreakable bond that almost everyone else has with a sibling, not some sort of unspoken feud like Adam and Alex have.

"Why won't you understand that you're not just any girl, Beatrice? You're my girl. And that's more important than just 'some girl'," he said.

I looked down at nothing and I felt a jittery feeling inside of me. Alex has always tried to make me feel special, but I couldn't help but think of Adam. Adam made me feel special without even trying. I wasn't sure why, but he did. I shook my head a little to clear my thoughts and looked up at Alex, who had taken a step closer.

"I'll make sure that nothing ever happens again," I said quietly. He watched me for a moment before tucking my hair behind my ear and pulling me in to trap me in his embrace. He buried his face in my shoulder and I hugged him back.

"I'll make sure too babe. And I'm not angry at you, really. I'm just upset you didn't tell me what was going on. I love you and I'll never hurt you again. Please trust me on that," he whispered. I took a deep breath and nodded. For now, I decided to trust him, but it's not going to be completely given to him easily.

Later that morning, I woke up and the bed was empty. The house was silent and I looked around, feeling groggy. I grabbed some of my clothes and went into the bathroom to take a shower and wake up. After stepping out, and brushing my hair, and teeth, I walked out into the hall. I didn't know what time it was because I left my new phone in the bedroom without checking it.

When I made my way into the dining room, no one was there like they usually were. No one was in the living room either. I went back to the room and grabbed my phone off of the nightstand and looked to see that I had a message.

Alex: Going job hunting again. Didn't wanna wake you. There's money under my pillow for you:)

I looked under the pillow and sure enough, there was a hundred dollar bill. I folded it and put it in my pocket. After what had happened yesterday, I didn't want to go out again. I was kind of afraid. I went into the living room and plopped on the couch with a sigh before turning on the TV.

"Oh. Good afternoon ma'am," came a voice from the East hallway. I looked over and there was a woman who looked to be in her late fifties. She stood up straight, her silver hair pulled up into a bun.
