Playing Games

The next morning, I woke up to an empty bed. Alex wasn't next to me and it was cold. I woke up and stretched my arms above my head with a yawn. There was a vase of flowers beside me that hadn't been there before with a note card on it.

I pulled it off and read the words.

Let the Games begin, Beatrice. -Adam

I felt my eyes widen in surprise. He was actually serious about this. I looked again at the cream and red roses, thinking of how beautiful they were. But I crumpled the note in my hand. This wasn't going to work. He was just wasting his time.

I got up and took a shower and got dressed before walking out into the kitchen. It was still early and everyone was sitting at the table, getting ready for breakfast.

"Oh hey, Bea. I was just about to come get you," Alex said, pressing a kiss to my cheek before sitting across from me. I smiled at him and saw that Anne and Benjamin were dressed in business outfits. They must have been getting ready to leave for work.

Adam walked in a moment later, and he was dressed up as well. Come to think of it, I've never seen him in casual attire. He sat down beside me after grabbing a cup of coffee and taking a huge sip.

"Good morning everyone," he said.

I glanced at him and saw the smile that he was hiding with his coffee cup. I looked away again when Alex started speaking.

"Bea, I was thinking that maybe instead of leaving today, we could go back when your break is over. Give us more time here to make sure that we're making the right decision," he said. I wanted to say that I never thought it was a good decision to begin with but I kept the snide comment to myself.

"Oh. Uh, yeah that sounds great," I said with fake enthusiasm. Adam set his cup down and looked at his younger brother.

"So you guys are staying longer," he said. Alex nodded and Adam smiled. "That's wonderful news little bro. Maybe we can spend some quality time together and get over everything that's happened."

I looked down to see Adam's hand on my leg, slowly sliding up the skirt that I was wearing. I looked up, trying to seem nonchalant, as if I wasn't burning wherever his skin came to contact with mine. I grabbed my spoon from the table and used the end of it to bury into his hand between the bones of where his fingers joined. He hissed and pulled back and everyone looked at him.

"Son, are you okay," Benjamin asked with a confused look on his face. Adam winced but nodded.

"Yeah. I think my back has been giving me problems or something," he said. He glanced at me and I looked over when Anne started chuckling into her coffee mug. She had no doubt seen what had happened since she was sitting on the other side of me and for a moment, I almost felt embarrassed.

After we all are breakfast, Anne, Adam, and Benjamin left, leaving Alex and I alone.

"So I'm going into town for interviews today. Are you gonna be okay here, by yourself," he asked. I shrugged and he smiled before placing a kiss on my forehead.

"Here. This goes to the black Volvo. Mom said it was okay if you used it. And here's my card, in case you wanted to go shopping or get some food or something," he said, handing me a pair of keys and a black card.
