Caught in the Act

Adam dropped me off and went home so that it didn't look suspicious if we had walked in together. It was only 8 o'clock when I arrived but Alex still wasn't back. I had left my phone in the bedroom and the first thing I did was check my messages. I had one voicemail from Alex.

"Hey Babe. It's uh me. I met up with some friends and I might be out really late tonight. I'm so so sorry. I'll make it up to you, I promise. I love you baby," he said into the phone. His slurred words and pulsing music in the background told me that he was at some kind of party.

It had seemed like forever since the last time I went to a party with him. He used to go out to parties all the time but ever since we moved in together, the partying had grown scarce. I laid down on the bed with my hair and limbs spread out around me, unconsciously pushing Alex out of my mind.

I started thinking about Adam, the treehouse, and the kiss. The more I thought about it, the more this strange feeling warped my stomach and chest. I wasn't completely sure what it was. Excitement, maybe? Or was it guilt? I didn't think it was guilt, because I felt strangely happy. But once I had that thought, I felt guilty for not feeling guilty.

The whole night had felt incredibly romantic, and I just kind of wished that it had been Alex instead. But at the same time, it was perfect, watching the sunset and the stars come out with Adam. I didn't really want to change anything that happened tonight.

There was a knock on my door and I stood up, pushing my thoughts away. When I opened the door, Gwen stood on the other side with a tray of sub sandwiches.

"Hello. I brought you some food since you missed dinner," she said. I took the tray and set it on the small coffee table.

"Thanks Gwen. I appreciate it," I said thankfully.

"Of course, dear," she replied.

She stood there a minute, with her hands joined in front of her as she swayed back and forth. I smiled, crossed my arms, and raised an eyebrow.

"What is it, Gwen," I asked.

"Oh well. I was just wondering how the date went. With Adam." My eyes widened and I shook my head.

"We didn't go on a date. It wasn't a date," I protested.

She hummed as if she didn't believe me and her eyebrows rose to her head.

"Oh. Then what did you guys do," she asked curiously.

"You're making a big deal out of nothing, Gwen. He took me to his treehouse and we just hung out," I told her. She gave me a strange smile, the one I often saw on Anne, as if she knew something that I didn't. It made me feel like I was the last one to get the joke.

"What," I asked, breaking through the silence.

"Nothing," she said with a chuckle. She turned towards the door and gave me one last smile.

"Enjoy your sandwiches," she said before walking out and closing the door behind her. I smiled and shook my head, wondering why she was acting so weird. I sighed and went over to eat the sandwiches.

After I finished, I slid into bed and laid down, wondering when Alex would be home. Probably not anytime soon, if he's partying. He used to stay out all night. I sat up in bed, grabbed my phone, and went straight to Snapchat. I looked at his location, got up out of bed, and put some decent clothes and shoes on.

I wasn't sure how I was going to get there, so I called the only other person I could think of.

"Hello?"
