“Where were you Malia?!” demands Shenae, the second she sees me.
I suppose it doesn't help that I've come in through the front since employees are only allowed through the assigned back entrance. Got to face the music now. Sigh.
“Uh, I'm sorry, there was a lot of traffic and –”
She rolls her eyes.
“Oh, save it. I know you walked here, Malia. You live 10 minutes away.”
Busted.
“Um...yeah...no...”
“Everett! We need you here!” yells Hadleigh, waving me over. A few customers look our way, so I try to hurry things up. But I’m terrible under pressure. Especially with Shenae glaring at me the way she is. Strict bosses suck.
“Oh um, I'm coming! Sorry Shenae, it won't happen again!” and I run to the counter and quickly duck under it.
“Malia...!” yells Shenae but she doesn't finish her sentence because her office phone starts to ring.
Hadleigh winks at me and passes me my name tag which I pin on quickly. I'm a pizza delivery girl, did I mention that?
“Thanks, Leigh." I whisper when Shenae has turned away to answer her phone. She grins.
“No problem, kiddo. Get ready to thank me again because I swapped a special order with your regular. No Mrs. Deafer tonight!”
I grin back and give her a small side hug.
“Oh god.” I sigh in relief.
“Thank you. I'm sick of that crabby woman. Who's the replacement?”
Her mouth curves slightly, making her look rather evil.
“Romero.”
I laugh and give her a high-five.
Romero's kind of like the ‘mean girl’ of the pizza industry - except he's a boy, and a delivery boy, at that. (Not that there's anything wrong with being a delivery boy since I myself deliver pizza)
“Nice! In your face, Ro-me-ro!” I sing, making a Z formation by snapping.
“Who's my special order?”
Leigh hands me a slip of paper with an address written on it, wiggling her eyebrows.
“Some guy named...Noah Holt and his friends. I smell a party!”
I giggle.
“And I smell pizza. Speaking of pizza, isn’t it ready? Shouldn't I be leaving now?”
She nods in agreement and turns towards the kitchen.
“Danzel, is order number 23 ready?" she yells, not bothering to walk across the small distance that stands between us and the kitchen. Dan comes out holding a pizza box.
“Quit screaming, Your Highness. Here you go. Nice shirt, Malia.”
I roll my eyes; he knows as well as I do that it’s not mine. He hands the pizza box to Leigh, winks at me and goes back to the kitchen. Danzel's one of the chefs at Cady's Pizza and one of the few close friends I have. Leigh turns to me and drops the box in my hands.
“Your delivery, your box. Now go!” and she pushes me in the direction of the car park.
“Yeah, yeah quit shoving!”
I wave goodbye to Leigh and open the door and step into the car park. I spot my assigned bike (which I hate, by the way) and hop on, after gently depositing the pizza in the carrier.
Look out, London! Here comes pizza girl Malia!
Ugh.
