One of the last few songs of the set had concluded, leaving the sold-out stadium in front of Y/N to deafen her with their applause. She was in her element, glowing beneath the stage lights with the floor thumping beneath her with bass. But she smiled tightly, as though to refrain from letting her lips fall at the next song on the list.
Used To This was her favorite song on the album, as it was Charles's. The main reason being that she used it as a way to pop the question to Charles the night of its release. But also because it was special to both of you in the sense that it shared your love story in a way so beautiful, Y/N felt she just had to share it. So, it was not playing the song that was the issue, more the person behind it.
It was a few months since Y/N has seen Charles face-to-face. A lot longer than Charles would both prefer. And he has tried visiting you multiple times throughout the tour. Even if it was only for a day, Y/N was counting down the minutes leading up to the day she could visit you, which was weeks away. Ultimately, she only let herself down more due to her eagerness to fly back and see Charles, because the hit team would fill any space in the calendar they could find for promotional opportunities, meetings, and everything alike. So, seeing Charles' smiling face without poor connection and being able to kiss it senselessly was something she would have to wait a bit longer for.
At this point, Y/N would give a whole spiel to the audience about how special this song is to her and explain a random cutesy story featuring the two of you for the audience to indulge in. But, to keep the building tears and heartaches in check, she closes her eyes to aim for a neutral expression and opens up the song with the plucks of a couple of strings. Her band, a bit caught off guard at first by the lack of segue, joined her a few moments after when she began singing into the microphone.
Y/N scans the room until her eyes land on a sign so obnoxiously large her eyes stayed peering at it for a minute. It was a large, white poster, smeared with black letters which look similar to how Charles writes. As she finishes up the second chorus, she reads over the sign and almost pisses herself from excitement.
I ALWAYS KNEW
Those were his exact words to you the night you found yourself telling him about your love towards him. And just to confirm the notion that it was you behind the sign, his eyes travel up the arm holding the sign until they stop once again on the object glinting from the flashlights being held up behind him.
Y/N felt a smile stretch over her face, so wide her cheeks hurt, but she sang the next chorus with so much love and passion at the fact that Charles was there. When he finally let the sign fall, your head peeked over the audience to meet his eyes. You blew him a kiss from where you stood a good way away, singing along with the people around you to the tune.
And Y/N swears later on in the hotel room, while she was belting out the lyrics of the bridge, she felt the airbrush along her cheek, and it felt just like your lips do.
