chapter one
( afterlife )BEING BURIED alive was everyone's worst fear. It was the fear of being trapped in a box where you could barely breathe, being buried six feet under the ground, being forced to listen to the world go on around you as if you had never been there. Like you weren't there. Like everyone you have ever met has completely erased you from their memory and replaced you with that sight of your broken, fragile, dead body.
Only this wasn't a fear for Odeya Stilinski. This was her reality.
Her mind was racing, trying to recollect what had happened. She was freaking out, banging on the wood coffin that kept her captive in the ground. But it did nothing, she was supposed to be dead, coffins weren't made for corpses to come out of. Dead meant dead.
"Derek" Odeya whined out, "Stiles!" she screamed, banging on the coffin harder and harder. Maybe if she kept banging on it then it would break open. But that wasn't working, only dirt was able to sneak through the cracks and fall onto her, finding room on her dried out lips, her face, in her hair. She was covered in the ebony dirt. "Somebody help me!" she screamed out. Tears rolled down her cheeks and down to the white dress she hadn't remembered changing into. What happened to me? she questioned.
She remembered Derek dying, she remembered holding his lifeless body and begging for him to come back to her. She remembered leaving his dead body and going inside the church to find Scott, to save him. What had happened after that? All she remembered was this darkness, this ache in her body that made her realize she was dead.
Odeya's eyes widened as she realized she wasn't dead, she was very much alive. She continued banging on the coffin, faster and faster, and faster until her hands begun getting numb and red. "Let me out!" she screamed to nobody, she didn't even know if it was day or night, how long had she been dead? how was she back? "Let me out," she said quieter this time. There was no use, nobody would be able to hear her this deep underground. Nobody but the spirits around her.
It's no use she thought, nobody can hear me. I'll be down here for eternity Odeya's mind screamed at her, almost taunting her.
She sniffled, wiping away the tears and snot that was falling down her face. This was, undeniably, her worst fear. "Anybody?" she called out, now knowing it was no use. There was no hope, absolutely no way anybody would ever be able to save her. She knew that she was stuck here. It would only be a matter of time before she ran out of air, which surprised her that she hadn't already. Only a matter of time before she died of dehydration. Or starvation. There really were a number of ways she could die. Again.
No, she couldn't spend all of eternity down here, she wouldn't. What had she done to be tortured this badly?
"Stiles?" she questioned. Maybe he was here, maybe he was visiting her, maybe he could hear her. If there was anybody she would want to see right now it would be him.
She looked down at her hands only to see them covered by worms and slugs. "No, no!" she wailed, grabbing her arm up only to him the coffin lid. "No!" she cried out, she hated bugs. They were almost as worse as being stuck in this coffin. "Get off, get off of me!" she yelled at the bugs.
Then the coffin busted open, dirt flying out off of the top and landing a few feet away. The lid was broken, shattered into a thousand little pieces. But most importantly, she could breathe.
Odeya could finally breathe fresh, clean air. Something she had forgotten about. She sat up, despite being in the coffin for god knows how long she wasn't sore. She didn't even know how on earth she was here, alive and breathing.
She stood up, using the walls of the remaining dirt around her to help her up. Her knees felt like jelly, her arms were beaten and bruising from how hard she had been banging the wooden coffin. She dusted off her dress that reached down to her ankles and then she proceeded to climb up the dirt walls, which was undeniably hard to do.
Once she reached the top she sat on the edge, panting. Her whole body felt stiff and sore like she could crack a bone just walking the wrong way. But she needed to get out of here, she was done with cemeteries. So she stood up again, heaving in as much air as she could possibly take in. Then she looked around, walking around in a circle.
"Mom?" she called out in shock. There Claudia was, standing in front of her still looking as beautiful as she did before. Her skin was glowing, her eyes were wide with imagination. She looked like an angel. "Mom!" she said again running toward her.
She pulled her into a hug but only passed right through her. "What? what the hell" she muttered, turning back around to face her mother who smiled.
"My beautiful daughter, my Odessa" Claudia said in awe. She went to touch Odeya's face and this time it didn't go through her. But it felt like a gust of wind, she couldn't feel her warmth, she couldn't feel anything."H-How am I here, how are you here?!" Odeya questioned. "I was, I was dead. You're-you're dead!" she yelled. She was confused, how was any of this possible? how was her mom standing in front of her right now possible?
"Oh sweetie, you should know by now nobody in this town stays dead," Claudia said with a smile. She picked Odeya's chin up to face her, forcing her to look. "Your time hasn't come, baby. You are meant for far greater things then resting here" she assured.
Odeya's face fell, maybe she was dead. She missed her mother and her advice, she was always so great at telling her what to do in confusing times. "But Mom, I-I was dead. So how is any of this possible? How am I alive? am I alive?" she questioned. She had a million questions running through her head and no answers.
Claudia sighed, dropping her hand from Odeya's face. "The world works in mysterious ways my darling," she said, only adding to Odeya's confusion. "I know you want to stay but you need to leave. Your brother and father need you. I need you to be there for them, can you do that?" she asked. Odeya nodded, speechless. "I love you Odessa. I know you will be able to do this" she assured, leaning in to kiss her on the head.
She shook her head, "No, no, I want to stay with you, Mom. P-please, let me stay with you" Odeya begged.
Then she blinked and Claudia was gone, almost as if she had never been there in the first place.
Odeya raised her arm to touch her face, touching the place her mom had just been holding her. "M-Mom?" she called out, looking around. But she knew nothing would happen, she knew she was gone again.
