I woke to the sound of a girls giggling through the front door of the apartment. I’m pretty sure I hated these people for interrupting my dream; the brown eyed boy leaving my mind as suddenly as he appeared there. Gripping at the reality that was around me I pushed any sense of longing from my mind. I watched on in confusion as a complete stranger opened the door to my apartment, the giggling thing following behind him, which I soon saw that it was Kate. What. The. Fuck. I could smell the alcohol reeking from Kate and her ‘friend’, more like a dick dragging a body behind, as they stumbled towards her bedroom. “Hi Elouise!” Kate slurred at me as she passed with the dark beauty leading her down the hall. That was weird. Too weird. I’m going back to sleep.
The heat of the sunlight streaming through the lounge room’s window was enough to wake me up. Struggling to my feet I wiped the sleep out of my eye and headed into the kitchen for daily dose of overly sweetened caffeine. I didn’t bother going back to my room to sleep. I mean, I could hear them all the way from the lounge room, imagine if I was in the room right next to them. I shuddered at the thought of it. Stretching my back as I walked into the kitchen, my eyes went wide as I saw the most perfectly sculpted bare arse right in front of me.
A wave of confidence crashed over me as I walked towards him silently, grinning cheekily to myself as I walked right up to him, slapping his butt. “Morning love!” I said cheerily, reaching around him to boil the kettle. He jumped, clutching his butt, rubbing it a little and turning to give me an evil eye. He looked me up and down before smiling at me, then his face dropped as he realised that he was butt naked nasty in my kitchen. “Make yourself at home why don’t ya?” I said, shooting him a cheeky wink to accompany my smile. “Oh, I, uh, shit.” He stuttered out, his golden brown eyes widening as he clutched himself in his hand and hurried down the hallway to get pants I assumed.
By the time he came back I had already made two coffees, leaving his just plain black in case he didn’t like the way I had mine, which a lot of people don’t like. I mean, a lot of people don’t really like it when coffee has two shots and four sugars. I have no idea what is wrong with people.
“Sorry about that, I didn’t know you would be up so early..” The voice bounced down the hallway before the dark beauty arrived in my kitchen again – clothed this time. He was dressed in his clothes from last night; black skinny jeans and a blue button down shirt with short sleeves and the front open which exposed his tones torso and tattoos. He smiled at me, showing off a set of perfectly straight white teeth. “I’m Zayn.” He extended his hand waiting for me to take it.
“Elouise,” I shook his hand and smiled politely. “I don’t know how you like your coffee so I left it black.” I explained and turned around to my coffee, adding the last sugar to the cup and stirring it.
“Double shot, 4 sugars and a dash of milk.” He said in a rush. I spun around in a state of shock and stared at him. He was looking in the fridge; he’s not going to find much in there. He looked over at me.
“People always give me that look when I tell them. They think I’m insane.” He laughed and pulled out some bacon. Since when did we have bacon? Kate must have gone shopping.
“You’re shitting with me right?” I asked, mouth hanging. He put his hands up in mock defence then began opening every single cupboard until he found a frypan.
“I’m actually not. I quite enjoy it.” He replied, not looking at me and turning to turn the stove on, placing three cuts of bacon into the frypan.
“This is weird. Because that’s exactly how I have my coffee, I can’t drink it any other way.” Turning away and taking my cup of coffee I handed it to him then proceeding to make the other cup of coffee the same way. He turned to me with a smile and held his hand up in the air.
“Gimme five!” I slapped my hand to his quickly, creating an epic smack! Echoing throughout the kitchen. I laughed at him as he fist pumped the air proclaiming that we are now best friends. My new friend and I set to work as we cooked up a storm of bacon, eggs, pancakes and waffles. It would be safe to say that the apartment smelt amazing. I began to wonder if we’d be sharing our breakfast with our neighbours if they smelt it.
My mind wandered to Kate. I totally didn’t see this coming. Maybe I had misjudged her for two years? I will have to talk to her about this mysterious person who is cooking in her kitchen and the events she heard last night. I entertained the idea of going and jumping on Kate’s bed demanding answers and bashing her with a pillow until she coughed up every detail. But if she is experiencing the dreaded first hangover then I think it’s best if I let her sleep. The poor darling.
On that thought, I skipped over to the medicine cabinet and pulled out my heavy duty pain killers and filled a glass of water. I placed them on the cooking island counter, ready for Kate to come out. “How are you going with the hangover?” I asked Zayn as he flipped a pancake. He smiled at me and nodded.
“I’m not too bad this morning. We didn’t actually drink that much.” He laughed to himself. “She is such a lightweight.” He smiled to himself as he looked down at the pan, poking its contents.
“You don’t need any painkillers?” She asked. “Well that was her first run in with alcohol so I’m not surprised she can’t handle it.” He shook his head to the painkillers and then laughed, throwing his head back as his eyes squinted closed.
“She’s so cute when she’s drunk. She can barely stand up on her own after a couple of tequila shots.” Zayn lifted the pan off the stove and put the pancake on the plate. “You know, it took her five attempts to get off the bar stool at the club last night?”
“And I thought there was a mutual understanding that we would never speak of that again.” My head snapped over to a frazzled looking Kate. She had racoon eyes, hair going in every direction and basically looked like death.
“Good morning beautiful,” Zayn said, walking over and giving her a kiss on the forehead. Kate smiled and leaned into him slightly as he wrapped his arms around her shoulders. I silently ‘aww’ed at them. He guided her over to the kitchen stools and sat her down with a plate full of food and the painkillers and water in front of her. I turned away from the disgusting cuteness and retrieved my phone from the hallway table. Switching it on, the phone powered to life and showed a new text. I opened it up, not recognising the number.
Wanna go for a coffee? X
Frowning down at my phone, I typed a quick reply asking who it was and how they’d gotten my number. The reply was almost instantaneous.
It’s Liam. Be at the Coffeehouse in 30 minutes? X
