Chapter 6
Jefferson, Ohio, December 20
No matter what way she thought about it, it was still terrifying. Today was the day all people listed, or named or however you want to say it, were meant to be taken from their homes.
I mean, abandonment and rejection had always been real fears for Skye, but this was something else. Her 'parents' were giving her away without any knowledge of what would become of her. She hadn't taken a proper breath since she last spoke to them and her fate was eating her alive.
It was difficult, going out and facing the town that had hardly ever liked her. Seeing looks of pity that she wanted to mean nothing. Seven other people from her school were called, at least that's what she'd heard. Including the four girls she had been watching the day that the power had gone out. So was the pretty blonde. Sort of blonde. But what are the importance of details anymore? She'd seen people giving them the looks Skye was receiving, as well as apologizing and all that useless stuff. But she knew, from the looks in their eyes that they'd all been called.
They'd explained the procedure a hundred times and she still felt like she had no idea what to do.
She was supposed to pack up her belongings and head to the designated building for 'relocation'. In Skye's case, her designated building was the rec center. And what belongings do you bring to the place you'll surely die?
Those girls, were they scared? Were they being forced to go by their guardians as Skye was? But they had each other . They wouldn't be alone like she would.
Skye's life was good. She didn't have troubles like the other teens. She didn't have to stress or struggle with anything. Her parents weren't a worry, she didn't go out so she had more than enough time to study, she was well off money-wise. Why her?
Her life was good.
But then she though of Rosa Luxembur.
Those who do not move, do not notice their chains.
Skye's life wasn't good. She didn't do anything that could possibly cause stress. She didn't associate with her parents enough for them to be a worry. She didn't go out. She studied for fun. She didn't even have to get a job. She was a recluse. Her.
Her life wansn't good.
She'd never realized how much she'd craved interaction with other human beings. She wanted to do all of the things other teens did. Do things that stressed her out. Have her parents be a pain in the neck. Go out and forget to study. She wanted some crappy job that she could screw up beyond belief.
She wanted to not be alone anymore. Her.Her life wasn't good.
Skye's suitcase was open within minutes. She couldn't make sense of what went in but she was pretty sure she threw in her mothers toothbrush instead of her own.
Oh well. She had no idea what time it was but she knew the alarms would sound when she would have to report to the rec center.
There was one thing she had to do.
Rather hastily, she rushed to trophy case where Mrs. White kept pictures, trophies, and yearbooks from Skye's previous years. She clutched the one from the year before and flipped to her grade's pictures.
Her finger shook slightly as she scanned across page after page, name after name.
Caitlin Smith.
Rose Brooks.
Eliza Brown.
Carrie Marin. And a pretty dirty blonde.
Meghan Locket.The girls she'd seen.
Caitlin, Rose, Eliza, Carrie, Meghan.
