-Damien's PoV-
Damien laid peacefully on the porch of the Bass cabin, listening to the breathing of everyone sleeping inside. Footsteps caught his attention, so he lifted his head and stared at Chris, who held a airhorn to a megaphone. He growled and barked a warning. "Shh, you'll ruin the surprise!" Chris whispered to him. Damien huffed and covered his ears as best he could.
Chris blew the airhorn and LeShawna came out yelling. "Do I look like a farmer to you??"
A few minutes passed and everyone started to line up outside. Damien laid his head back down and listened while everything happened. Eva growled at Cody for trying to touch her MP3 player, and Owen inquired about breakfast.
Chris told Owen he'd get breakfast after the 20K lap around the lake. Damien perked up when Eva started to lose her temper. He shifted and helped hold her back. "Eva, try to control, your temper!" Courtney hissed at her.
After a minute, Eva cooled down and everyone lined up to start running. Damien shifted before hand and waited for Chris to count down. Before Chris even said 'go' Damien shot off like a bat out of hell. Dirt flew as he sprinted, leaving everyone else in the dust.
-several long hours later...-
Damien laid patiently on the porch of the mess hall as the others began to show up. A water bowl laid empty about a foot from his nose. "Damien?" Damien lifted his head to look at Gwen. "Aren't you hot?" He shook his head no. "How? It's boiling out here." Damien pressed his head to her hand, and she pulled away. "Jeez! Your fur is ice cold!" He sat up and switched forms. "Sorry. Usually my fur is a little warmer than that. Werewolves are built to withstand days in blistering heat and freezing cold, and our bodies switch depending on the weather, so in winter my fur is about 80 degrees, and in summer it drops to stand around 50 or 60. Its why I lay in the sun so much, and why the thickness of my fur only changes when I cut my hair."
Gwen stared at him. "No wonder the heat never bothers you." Damien nodded. "Shall we go inside? I'm pretty sure everyone is waiting on us." Gwen nodded and he stood and followed her inside.
"What took you so long? We lost the challenge because of you!" Heather glared directly at Damien. "Newsflash princess, he was here hours before any of us got halfway through." Duncan pointed out. Damien grunted at both of them and slid into a seat next to DJ.
"Wait, if they lost the challenge, that means we won!" Gwen and the rest of the gophers started cheering.
Chris came is and shouted. "Hold it! That wasn't the challenge." Gwen stopped. "What did he say?"
"Who's hungry??" Chris pulled back a curtain to reveal a thanksgiving style table. Damien's stomach twisted into a bitter knot, and he dropped his head onto the table with an audible groan.
"Whats wrong? Aren't you hungry?" The very smell of turkey and gravy made his dwindling hunger vanish. "No I'm not. I think I'd much prefer a medium-rare steak, thank you." Damien tried to keep the bile from rising in his throat. "I'm gonna go sit outside."
Damien escaped the sickening smell of turkey by fleeing to a grassy patch of earth just beyond the steps. "Damien, you ok?" Damien turned to see Duncan standing on the porch. "I think so, yeah." he tried to even his breathing. "Birds!" he spat out the word furiously. "What do you mean?" Duncan asked. Damien shook his head. "I can't stand poultry. Never cooked right, and even worse raw. Just the smell of Turkey makes my stomach knot."
"I thought wolves loved meat." Duncan said clearly following either small amounts of knowledge or stereotypes. "Werewolves are different." You said unphased. "Like people we have very different preferences in food and taste. I just so happen to hate pourty."
Damien started walking towards the trees aiming for a hunt. Duncan followed him, ignoring the challenge. "Aren't you hungry?" Duncan shrugged and followed him anyways. "Alright, but I'm hunting, so if your not one for blood turn back now. " Duncan laughed. "Your funny. I think I'll stick with you."
Damien shrugged. "Okay, your mental health." He shifted and continued, keeping his nose in the air for smells. Rabbit drifted over his nose and his stomach growled. Damien stopped dead in his tracks and motioned for Duncan to be silent. Like a viper he crept toward the rabbit.
Slowly but surely he inched forward until he could flash out a paw to stun the rabbit and bite its throat. Blood spilled into his mouth and he tasted the iron tang. Damien didn't hesitate to dig in to the rabbit, filling his stomach with gamey meat.
Whem he finished he let out a long yawn, tired after eating, so he laid down for a nap. "Hey, mind if I lay with you? I'm pretty tired." Damien nodded and laid up against a tree, with Duncan laying on his side. He was confortable, starring at the sky dotted with clouds. "That cloud looks like a skull." Duncan said randomly. Damien whined and looked but only saw a crooked tooth. "Yeah look, that one there." Duncan traced a cloud into a skull. Damien tilted his head and barked softly.
Damien laid his head down in Duncan's lap. Duncan put his hand behind his ears and they laid peacefully.
-About 2 hours later-
Damien walked close by Duncan as they made their way to the campfire pit. Duncan and Damien had lazed about not sleeping for 2 hours and had figured they'd head back to their team.
When they arrived everyone was wide awake. "So what happened?" Damien asked Gwen. "2nd half of the challenge. He called it the awake-athon. We're not allowed to sleep." He shrugged. Like hell he was doing that. If he felt tired he would sleep. He felt pretty bad thinking like that, but his mental health was already tattered and healing, and he wasn't keen on having the healing take longer because Chris said so. He was 17 alomost 18 and Chris knew he likely wouldn't listen.
So Damien sat, paced, and shifted to hunt a few times over the next 15 hours after which he gave in and fell asleep. Only staying to accompany Duncan, who asked to lay on his side again. He was alseep when the 24 hour mark hit and Duncan awoke him for a shower. For him. Damien's fur stank apparently. He sighed and got up, leaving Duncan to go take a shower.
When he got to the bathrooms the air was already steamy and smelled of Heather's lavender soap. He coughed and worked his way past to get his things from the cabin.
Damien came back a few minutes later to find Heather wrapped in a towel headed for a stall to dress. "Ew! Pervert!" He growled and walked past her to a shower.
He set his things in the locker outside the shower and went to turn on the hot water and strip, remembering to lock the door at the last second. He sighed as the hot water cascaded down his back and over his face and body. He knelt on his knees and sat facing the wall and dozing in the steamy heat. Damien don't know exactly how long he were sitting in the water, just that when he woke up the hot water was gone and several hours had passed.
When he'd finished and dressed, he went back to find that another day had passed and the challenge was nearing 72 hours. At this point he aksed a cameraman who had passed out. "Everyone but Duncan and Gwen." The guy replied. "Okay, thanks." Damien walked back to the campfire pit to see Duncan hitting the ground. He sighed and shifted and nosed him awake long enough to drag him back to the bass cabin.
