She nodded absently as her parents told her of their important appointment... or something along those lines. They were both dressed up, her mother in a periwinkle dress while her father wearing a tuxedo, though, Makenzie didn't pay this much mind.
"And your babysitter is on her way, mk? Lock the door behind us, and only let Martha inside, right?" Her mother listed these requests very slowly so the 6 year old understood her correctly. She nodded, and when her mother gave her an expecting look, she replied.
"Yes, mommy." She said softly.
Both of her parents said their goodbyes and left. Makenzie closed and locked the doors behind them.
Makenzie sat there for a moment staring at the locked door tearing up slightly, why must her parents leave she wondered. She never liked her babysitter, she never played dolls with her and only wanted to be on the phone with her boyfriend. She began to slowly walk to the living room to continue watching her favorite show, Dora the Explorer. As she approached the couch she heard a loud bang on the door, "Martha's here already?" She quietly said to no one in particular confused as can be as her parents left not too long ago. She swallowed and slowly approached the locked door, having a weird feeling in her stomach... as if it were trying to tell her something? No, she looked through the small window right next to the door and recognized the woman she dreaded. Martha. She grudgingly let her in, Martha absorbed in her phone. The door slammed shut behind her and Makenzie decided she'd be safe and lock it once more. It was a house rule, really, doors are locked no matter what. After watching as Martha continued blankly staring at her phone screen, her babysitter turned her head and looked Makenzie up and down.
"So, are you just gonna stand there all night, or what?" She said shortly, clearly bored out of her mind. Makenzie shrugged, though, her stomach did a flip, something was wrong, but she couldn't place it.
Makenzie quickly walked over to the living room and laid on the soft beige colored couch, and continued watching her favorite show laughing at Dora'a joke. "Can you please be quiet? Your being too loud" Martha said annoyed and rolled her eyes, she sat on the couch pushing Makenzie's legs off the couch and continuing to giggle at her boyfriends text. Makenzie looked at her in shock, huffed and sat on the floor and locked her eyes on the television once more. A few moments later a loud bang was heard from the basement below them, Makenzie quickly looked at her babysitter and said "Martha what was that??" Worry creeping up on her slowly. Martha consumed one her phone never once looked up to face Makenzies eyes. She looked around at the dark rooms that were just beside her and heard once more a bang downstairs, her stomach flipped and her breathing quickened. "Martha" she cried out.
That must have grabbed the babysitter's attention, because she was glancing around the room, a spark of fear in her eyes. Martha looked at Makenzie and pressed a finger to her lips. "Shh... stay here really quick. You don't have pets, right?"
Makenzie was rather worried by Martha's reaction, what was going on? She simply shook her head, her voice caught in her throat.
Martha stood up and crept towards the stairway that leads into the basement. Makenzie's dad never liked it whenever she went down there, he said he had important things down there that he didn't want her to accidentally break. She was about to speak up about this, but her thoughts were cut off by Martha.
"Hello? If anybody's down there, you're trespassing, I'll call the police!" Her voice quavered, as if she were trying to sound threatening, but just didn't have the courage to get the right tone of voice out. Makenzie crawled onto the couch and covered her eyes, scrunching her nose as she tried to become as small as possible.
Martha spoke once more hoping nothing was actually down the dark basement. "If anyone is down there I'm warning you I will call the police" she almost whispered in fear. Makenzie noticing that Martha leaked of fear and worry she began to cry knowing something bad was happening. Another loud bang echoed throughout the basement but this time it was much closer to the entrance. Martha gasped and closed the door and to make things worst there was no lock on the basement door. Martha rushed over to Makenzie and grabbed her hand pulling her free hand to her mouth motioning to be quiet. They both trotted upstairs and went inside a bathroom that had a lock on it. Martha closed the door halfway until she realized she had left her phone on the couch, their only want to contact the police. She mentally cursed to herself and looked at Makenzie.
Makenzie was on the verge of tears, her breathing grew shaky, and her blue eyes seemed to be pleading to Martha, as if she had control over the situation. Makenzie whispered to Martha.
"M-Martha... what's happening? I'm scare-"
"Shh," Martha interrupted, clasping her hand on Makenzie's mouth to help silence her, "Everything's going to be alright, ok? Do you guys have a house phone? That I can use to call the police?" She spoke calmly, though, it was clearly faked for Makenzie's sake. Unfortunately, Makenzie wasn't aware of any house phone, so, she shook her head again. Martha swore under her breath and looked around the bathroom, there was a window, possibly their only way out, but they weren't on ground floor, so jumping would likely not be the best decision.
Martha crouched in-front of Makenzie and spoke in a whispered shaky voice "Makenzie I need to go back downstairs to grab my phone so we can call the police okay? I'm going to need you to shut and lock the door behind me" Makenzie looked up at Martha with tears eyes "I want mommy and daddy" Martha looked at her with sorrow "I know pumpkin but right now I need you to be strong and do this for me" Makenzie nodded and Martha turned to the door and glanced behind her and nodded signaling to close the door. As the small girl closed the door Martha looked down the dark hallway and began quietly walking down it and glanced down the stairway. She breathed in almost holding her breath thinking that it would help anything. She grabbed onto the railing and slowly started making her way down the carpeted steps. Seeing the living room in her view she rushed over and grabbed her phone thinking it would be a now or never situation to call the police. Pulling up the phone call app she heard over the semi-loud t.v a creak where the basement is.
