Makenzie sighed, she was right no one would believe her. If he didn't believe her she has to make him believe. She thinks of ways that could help him believe her story when suddenly a bright idea comes to her mind. What if she makes the monster come out? "Makenzie eat your pancakes, you don't want them cold do you?" Her dad spoke softly and she shook her head no. She grabbed her plastic fork and began to eat the small bites of syrup covered pancakes as she planned on how to get at least someone to believe her. It was later that day and she was bored out of her mind, all her toys were in her room but her parents won't let her go get them. They wouldn't even go get them for her, she asked multiple times already but they said they were to busy doing important stuff. She sighed and laid on the soft carpeted floor in the living room staring at the ceiling, lost in her own thoughts.
She decided after a few minutes, she'd watch her favorite show. So, she turned the t.v. on and watched. Though, she couldn't get fully involved with Dora's adventures... she still had the monster under the bed in the back of her mind. It wasn't until Dora asked the audience a question that Makenzie realized she had stopped watching the show entirely. Instead, she was staring down the hall, right at her bedroom door. She sighed and turned her attention back to the show, but not sooner than she decided to turn the t.v. off. After doing so, she went back to staring at her bedroom door.
"Mommy! Can I get my barbies?" She called over her shoulder. Her mother sighed in exasperation.
"No! We already told you, no!" Her mother said sternly. Makenzie didn't like that answer. So, she took a deep breath and called again.
"Why not?" She said this with a hint of annoyance, though, not enough for her mother to notice. It would have been considered as an "attitude" and Makenzie would be in trouble.
"Because we said so, Makenzie! Just watch Dora the Explorer, ok?" Her mother called back, annoyance clearly there.
"The bad guy's gone, mommy! The monster under the bed made him go awa-"
"I don't want to HEAR about the monster under the bed again! Do you understand me?" Her mother interrupted, in a tone of voice she hardly used towards Makenzie. In fact, her eyes feared up a bit in response, she didn't like being yelled at.
Makenzie's eyes began to water, all she wanted to do was go to her room but her parents wouldn't allow that. She wiped her teary eyes and looked at her parents at the kitchen table distracted by their computers. She stood up and stared at her parents as she slowly made her way to the hallway. Once she got into the hallway she quickly picked up her pace. She took a deep breath in and opened the door carefully and walked Inside making sure to close the door behind her. Turning on the bright light she began to look around, in her closet, under her covers, once she reached under her bed and took a moment to really make sure she didn't miss a single thing. But still nothing was there. She wondered right then if maybe she was just imagining the monster being real or not. A sigh escaped her lips and she grabbed her Barbie dolls sitting across the room. That's when she heard it, a light tap beneath her bed. She dropped her dolls and turned around to face her bed, "Hello? Monster? You don't need to be afraid" she spoke in a gentle soft tone.
Makenzie inched towards the bed before she heard the clicking she was so familiar with. Suddenly, she didn't want to get too close to the bed, she was still pretty weary about this monster. But before she could turn around, his low and grumbly voice sounded from under the bed.
"Don't cry, Makenzie. They only want you to be safe." His voice was kind and gentle. Makenzie nodded and blinked the tears back. The monster chuckled.
"I'm not afraid, my dear. I would believe it's you that is afraid. Brave, yes, but still frightened. And even more than you, your parents are terrified. You don't understand now, my child, but once you have a child of your own, you will fear the day you lose them." He said simply, a little tone of sadness in his voice, hardly noticeable though. Makenzie nodded slowly and lay on the floor, gazing into his glowing red eyes. He smiled kindly at her and waved, she reciprocated the gesture.
"Do you want to play dolls with me?" She whispered excitedly. And to her dismay, the monster's smile faded and he shook his head slowly.
"No, I'm afraid I can't today, Makenzie. You shouldn't be in here. Be a good girl and take care of your parents, huh? They'll give you your freedom soon enough." Again, it sounded as if many voices talked at her, and she turned around and collected her dolls. She quickly looked back under the bed and the monster was gone. She sighed and quickly snuck out of her bedroom, closing the door behind her.
She tiptoed down the hallway and made it back to the living room without her parents noticing. She looked down at the dolls in her hands and decided she might as well play with what she rightfully stole.
