Makenzie took a short nap before waking up about an hour later.
"'Kenz! Sweetie, come eat some lunch." Her mother opened the door as Makenzie blinked awake. It took her a second to process, but she looked around to find the monster wasn't there with her. Her mother noticed this odd behavior and raised an eyebrow curiously.
"Makenzie? Hunny, what are you looking for?" She asked sweetly, looking around her room as well. Makenzie shook her head slowly and got up, taking her mother's hand.
"Nothing, mommy."
They both walked into the kitchen, Makenzie walking a tad bit slower than her usual. Her mother must have not noticed because she continued to drag her along. After eating a small lunch, Makenzie's mother eyed her child wearily, as if she was looking at a stranger. Makenzie brushed off and left the room, deciding to watch her favorite show. She does so, sitting on the couch, her eyes glued to the screen.
After about a few hours, Makenzie's father came home. He seemed to be decently stressed, kicking his shoes off lazily and setting his things on the dining room table. He half-heartedly greeted his wife with a kiss and walked over to Makenzie.
"Hey, 'Kenz, how was lunch?" He asked as if he were reading off a script. He kissed Makenzie's forehead and walked with her mother back into the kitchen.
Makenzie hardly noticed what her dad said, so, she wasn't really offended when he didn't give her room to respond. She continued to watch Dora the Explorer when she heard her mother in the next room.
"Honey, I thought you sorted this out!" She said exasperatedly.
"I thought I did! The paperwork is all in order, I don'-"
"You don't, what? You need to figure this out because I am not willing to-"
"WHAT DO YOU KNOW?!" Her father yelled, overpowering the sound of the t.v. entirely. Makenzie's eyes widened as she peered over the back of the couch. Her father's never yelled at her mother before. He seemed to be restraining himself from doing something he'd regret, her mother looking furious, yet, surprised, maybe even frightened. Her father glanced at Makenzie and must have realized the seriousness of the situation, "Makenzie, go to your room. Me and mommy need to talk about something.." he said weakly, motioning towards the girl's room.
"Why are you upse-"
"I said go! 'Kenz! Now!" He said sternly, making Makenzie flinch as he did. A bit of pain and regret flashed in his eyes when he noticed his daughter's reaction, but he didn't take anything back. Makenzie started crying and ran to her room, closing the door behind her. She crawled underneath the bed and sat there for a while, just crying to herself.
Makenzie continued to hear her father yell at her mother, crying even harder she plugged her ears as she hoped it would block out their yelling. She suddenly felt a stroke on her cheek when her monster comes back, she leaned into the monsters hand. "Shh darling is okay, everything is okay." He said with a soothing voice. "They are mad at each other, they are never mad at each other monster" she cried out. He continued to rub her cheek feeling sympathy for her. She continued to cry until no more tears left her red puffy eyes, hearing the yelling has stopped she sniffled and began to hiccup. She didn't feel the monsters hand anymore, disappointed she crawled out from under the bed and glanced around the room to see the monster nowhere in sight. She tiredly walked over to her door and cracked it open peering into the hallway that led into the living room. Carefully opening it fully she walked out of her room, seeing no one she began to panic.
