The art at the top of this chapter is not mine.
Ravenpaw entered the barn after hunting a vole that was eating in a bush nearby. The vole was clamped tightly in his jaws, Barley had already hunted that night.
They had a system, Barley hunted at dusk and Ravenpaw hunted at dawn. They would take snacks in between the meals. They found a family of mice the other day in a hole in a hay bale.
Barley was a black-and-white splotched tomcat. Ravenpaw was a black tom with a white fleck on his chest and a white tail tip. They both secretly loved eachother like mates but never told the other. Ravenpaw had loved Barley for longer, though. Ravenpaw mainly loved Barley for his loving and kind personality. They both were constantly at the other's side through thick and thin. Inseparable. Even through the hardest times.
Life was great, for both of them. The hard work of being in a clan was thrown off carelessly. Ravenpaw shook his pelt from flakes of wet snow before smoothing it again with a few licks and making his way over to Barley, he lay next to the tom carelessly, "Hello, Ravenpaw." Barley greeted simply as he watched his friend drop the vole. It was big enough to fill both of them. Ravenpaw looked up at Barley and sat up, "H-Hi." He replied simply, stuttering softly as he spoke to his best friend.
They both ate the vole, finishing it quickly. There was one bump in the road for Ravenpaw after that, he had intertwined tails with Barley. He felt himself heat up under his pelt but he ignored it and continued talking until Barley had realized it as well.
Ravenpaw untwisted their tails, "S-Sorry." He murmured softly before feeling somebody press closer and intertwine tails with Ravenpaw. Ravenpaw glanced up to see Barley laying next to him, "No, it's fine." Barley assured simply with a mrrow of laughter at Ravenpaw's nervous tone of voice.
Barley gently licked his friend behind the ears, wishing in his head that they would become more than just having a once in a lifetime friendship. He started to hear a soft rumbling welling up from the other tom's chest, Barley felt Ravenpaw lean into his touch slightly.
Ravenpaw rest his head on Barley's chest, giving his own chest a few embarrassed licks before letting Barley gently lap behind his ears.
Barley let his long, fluffy tail curl around Ravenpaw's petite frame as he groomed the others back, behind his ears, and on the back of his head as well as his neck. The licks were soothing and rythmic, making Ravenpaw feel relaxed. It was a feeling he had rarely experienced before, his anxiety was horrible and would probably effect him for the rest of his life.
Ravenpaw cuddled up to the slightly older male subconsciously, finally getting the luxurious feeling of being safe and warm in the comforting presence of his caring friend.
Barley intertwined their tails again, continuing to lick Ravenpaw behind the ears. Great StarClan. I wish he loved me like I love him. The tomcat thought darkly, which was unusual for his usually cheery personality.
Ravenpaw licked Barley's chest gently, "Do you want to mess with the sheep?" He asked sleepily, clearly extremely calmed down which was enough for him to fall asleep right there.
Barley snorted out of amusement, trying to ignore the fact that Ravenpaw just licked his chest, "You sound really tired. You should probably atleast rest a bit. Even if it is just until the sun is in the middle of the sky." He mewed softly to his friend.
It was currently close to noon, anyways. Ravenpaw yawned but nodded in defeat, "Okay, okay, fine." He purred and buried his face in Barley's chest fur. Ravenpaw was too tired to be thinking about his actions. Who knew the small tom could get tired just by being meaninglessly groomed by the rogue beside him?
Barley couldn't help himself but murmur, "I love you, Ravenpaw." Under his soft breath before he fell into slumber.
Ravenpaw too fell asleep, one thought still in his clouded mind.
I love you too, Barley.
A.N. How was that for a first chapter? I got 717 words in, including this. Without this, I got 701.
