Chapter 5: Gone

The voices stopped whispering inside my head. My ears could no longer hear the blood-curdling scream of the girl. My mind was foggy and my eyes could only confirm one thing.

Another me was standing in front of me.

The room, the mirror separating us and everything else disappeared out of sight. All that matters was my reflection coming to life.

Though we have the same eyes, nose, mouth, body and everything else, she is not me. And I am not her. She is just a replica of my appearance.

We locked eyes for a moment then she smiled at me. Even the curl of her lips were horrifyingly same as mine.

"Hello, Helia. It's been too long," she said in an unusually calm voice.

I was startled to hear the exact similarity of our voices. "What? I...I don--don't know wha--what you're talking about!" I yelled at her. How did she know my name and who exactly is she?

"Stop fighting, Helia. Just take my hand and the memories that haunt you will be gone," she said. "Forever." She extended her hand towards me.

"What do you mean?" I asked warily as I looked at her extended hand.

She didn't respond. She only walked towards me. With a sad smile on her face, she touched my forehead with her hand.

The moment her fingers got in contact with my skin, I suddenly felt a searing pain in my forehead. I seemed as if my skull was breaking apart into a thousand pieces and my brain was being sucked out of my head through my ears.

The pain was only for a few seconds but it felt like an entire lifetime. When it finally stopped, I opened my eyes. I was in a clearing of the woods. There was a small pond in the middle of the clearing and a large tree was standing by it. The ground was carpeted with all different kinds of fragrant and colorful flowers and the grass was so green. I inhaled the sweet smell of them. Just then, a child's giggle caught my ear.

I raised my head and saw two little girls sitting on a low branch in the large tree. I couldn't see their faces, only their backs. But I could see that they both have short dark hair and wore a matching pink frilly dress.

They were giggling and poking each other and I couldn't help but laugh along with them. They stopped and turned their heads toward me.

Their eyes were both removed from its sockets and their faces were pale and greasy with sweat and blood. The expressions they wore were grim and horrifying. Their mouths opened and poured out thick red blood.

The blood trickled down from the tree and found its way to me. It climbed on my foot up to my head, covering my entire body. I could hear the coming footsteps of the two little girls despite the greasy blood forcing its way into my ears, nose, and eyes.

The blood finally entered my body and I lost control of my it. I lay down on the grass, the sickly sweet scent of the flowers suddenly smelled like poison. My body convulsed and my senses were gone.

And for a moment, I too, was gone.
